The Blue Whale 1 (BW1) is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle with the capacity to place up to 200 kg into a 500 km Sun-Synchronous Orbit. There she goes, the largest balloon ever launched in Europe! 🎈 Today at 14:39 UTC, the 13th of July, the 60MCF balloon soared into the sky, aiming to attempt a float altitude of >150,000 feet. This is higher than NASA’s previous stratospheric balloons have flown and at that height you are above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere, which is good for studying various radiation that our atmosphere otherwise would block. “The value of the 60MCF balloon is of high importance to the scientific community.  Some of the instruments that are being flown are so sensitive to interference from the atmosphere that even flying a little bit higher than our typical altitude of 120000-130000 feet can bring a lot of scientific reward.  Qualification of this balloon will allow NASA to continue to stretch the boundaries of what we provide to the scientific community.” says Andrew Hamilton, Director of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Balloon Program Office. This week we participated in the 2nd edition of the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana workshop, “L’impegno italiano nel settore dei CubeSat: tecnologie e missioni future.” "Participating in this workshop was a great opportunity for us. We showcased our robust ground station network and upcoming satellite launch services, highlighting our capability to support the entire lifecycle of space missions. We are excited about the future collaborations with Italian companies and confident that our extensive expertise and resources will significantly contribute to the success of micro and mini-satellite missions", says Davide Starnone, Managing Director at SSC Space Italy 🇮🇹 Thank you to the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana for organizing and hosting the event, which provided insights into the status of the CubeSat sector in Italy and allowed the numerous participants to share their knowledge and network! 📡👩🚀

Are you ready for the remarkable Alpha rocket? 🚀

 As part of the launch partnership with SSC, Firefly Aerospaces Alpha rocket will launch from Esrange Space Center where launchpad modifications are already underway. With the inaugural Alpha launch scheduled for 2026, the new complex will support commercial customers in the broader space market. The launch capability at Esrange will also enable tactically responsive space missions to further advance national security.  

 Thanks to the use of advanced carbon composite technologies for the entire airframe and cryogenic propellant tanks, Alpha is a lightweight vehicle with exceptional performance capabilities. 

 “We’re pleased to announce this historic collaboration that will have a huge impact on the global commercial launch market, not least in Europe and the U.S.,” said Charlotta Sund, CEO at SSC. “Reducing the current gap of orbital launch sites in Europe, this collaboration strengthens the transatlantic link between Sweden and the U.S. whilst offering unique space capabilities for the Swedish NATO membership. As the annual “Almedalen week” has come to a close, we look back at some of the highlights from this year's event.
