A remanufactured gearbox, that’s a new gearbox made from reused components. In the age of second-hand stores, it’s only natural that the circular mindset also applies to a truck- and bus manufacturer like Scania. Christer Wilhelmsson, Head of Engineering at Gearbox Assembly and Axle Assembly and IT Transmission, and Gearbox Project Engineer Kevin Karlsson had an amazing team that made the remanufactured gearbox possible. It took several months of planning and drafting of what the gearbox would look like and how it should fit into the production flow. Producing it consumed about 50 per cent less material and roughly 45 per cent fewer carbon emissions compared to making a brand-new one. And it turned out just as good as one built with new components. Project coordinator Maria Bodingh Johansson: “The most important thing for me is that we have worked cross-functionally within Scania, which shows that together we can achieve a really good result.” This success just shows that there are future possibilities of incorporating a circular economy of sustainable, remanufactured parts into vehicle production at Scania and the heavy-vehicle industry.

Maria Papp's remarkable journey from navigating the bustling streets of Stockholm as a bus driver to pioneering climate control systems for Scania's buses is a tale of relentless passion and innovation. In her current role as a Development Engineer, Maria is at the forefront of testing battery-electric buses across the diverse landscapes of Europe. Her adventures have taken her through the narrow alleys of Spain and enabled her to achieve feats such as completing long-distance trips on a single charge. She has driven BEV buses and trucks for over 20,000 km across Europe and charged heavy-duty BEVs at more than 70 different stations. Maria's work is important in advancing electric vehicle technology, ensuring that Scania's buses are not only efficient and safe but also dependable under various environmental conditions. However, her story goes beyond the technical aspects of her job. It's about the human connections she's made along the way – the unexpected applause from onlookers, the sense of pride in contributing to a greener future, and the collaborative spirit that propels her and her team to new heights. She treasures the unique experiences of each trip. Her co-workers have been a great support. She says gratefully, “Those trips would be impossible without like-minded, enthusiastic and knowledgeable colleagues”. The engineer feels optimistic and motivated by the developments of BEV, seeing how the range and performance have been improving.

“Vehicles. That was what I wanted to work with.” Our Chief Technical Officer and Head of R&D, Sara Forsberg, came to Scania because she saw a company with a steady and innovative tech-development attitude and a product you can actually see. Sara credits her success to the teams she has worked with: “It’s a true team effort that brought me here. I’m grateful to belong to a company with so many supportive and intelligent people.” As Head of Scania R&D, she builds a Brand Identity Development organisation from scratch. “It’s super exciting to lay the foundation to shape an organisation with Scania’s needs in mind as well as the common tech development in TRATON.” One of Sara’s first managers influenced her on leadership: “He was genuinely interested in what you had to say and extremely knowledgeable. You could sense the warmth in the group.” So she wants her team to share their opinions, even if they don’t necessarily agree. “Speak from your heart without being judged. Ask for advice and celebrate success. That’s the kind of environment I strive for.” For Scania to remain successful, we must remain transparent and collaborative: “I want to stay away from the ‘top-down’-feeling of hierarchy. Know your responsibilities and dare to make decisions. Believe in yourself, even if that can sometimes be hard.”
