#inthemedia Using Virtual Reality for teaching physics and chemistry at high schools, and developing an electric fan with a personalised and more comfortable frequency. These are just two of the projects highlighted in an article by HD-Sydsvenskan about Leapfrogs, LU Innovation's summer scholarship program for students from Skåne and Blekinge. "You see the other participants' challenges and learn, but we also share contacts and help others," says FEIYU WU, the founder of SensoryWind in her interview. LU Innovation KTH Innovation Uppsala University Innovation

Great to meet Spain's future talent! 👋 🇪🇸 Medicon Valley, which straddles Lund, Malmö and Copenhagen, is the Nordic region's leading life science hub. So, we were very happy to host a group of students from the University of Navarra's Women for Science and Technology club, who were visiting the region to explore opportunities. We had a lively discussion about life science, innovation and entrepreneurship in Lund, led by our innovation developers, Cecilia Jädert Widblom and Annika Lindström, together with Sarah Lidé at Medicon Village – all with strong backgrounds in life science & innovation. Many thanks to María Pilar Lostao Crespo at University of Navarra for reaching out!

Edouard Berrocal developed a new method for testing cloudy liquids using scattered light. This year, the company he founded, Spec-Imaging, released their first product. 🎉 Could it be a potential game-changer in industries such as food processing, medicine, and wastewater management? Continue reading to find out what working with innovation has meant for Eduard as a researcher. This includes the opportunity to delve into a new field, work with a strong team, and explore applications in various industries, all while staying in academia, as a senior lecturer at The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University.
From novel findings to groundbreaking products: “I like to find solutions to problems that have never been solved.”

Congratulations 🎉 to Linnéa Törnblom and Isabelle Stålberg, two engineering students at The Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, for winning this year's Klinnovation final pitch competition! They impressed the judges with their innovative use of AI to analyse images of fine-needle aspiration in order to diagnose and classify indolent lymphomas, a group of slow-growing cancers. The students' pitch was part of Klinnovation, a course focused on applying biomedical engineering knowledge to address medtech problems with an emphasis on clinical innovation. In Sweden, approximately 2,500 people are diagnosed with lymphomas annually. Normally this means they must undergo a multi-step, often uncomfortable investigation process that typically includes an invasive operation to perform a biopsy of the lymph node. However, the team, along with their supervisors Mats Ehinger and Kalle Åström, developed an AI tool capable of distinguishing between benign and indolent samples from fine-needle aspirations. This procedure is a minimally invasive way to obtain a cell sample to confirm a diagnosis or guide treatment. The program can accurately differentiate between healthy and sick samples 93% of the time, and correctly classify three different types of indolent lymphomas with 90% accuracy. Their program has the potential to make lymphoma investigations faster and less invasive, as a specific diagnosis can be directly made from the fine-needle aspiration. Furthermore, this solution could save over 12 million in healthcare costs annually, just for the Region Skåne 💰. The team now hopes to extend their research by testing their solution on larger sample sizes. Thank you also to Lorenzo Grassi, Josefin Starkhammar, and Tomas Jansson for involving LU Innovation, represented by Nicolas Arriagada and Lars Svensson, as part of the jury.

What a fantastic kick-off for the Leapfrogs summer programme this week!☀️Throughout the summer, students from Skåne and Blekinge get the chance to develop their innovative ideas and startups through workshops, networking opportunities with like-minded entrepreneurs, and time and financial support to develop their ideas further. The kickoff workshop opened with inspiration from Erik Karlsson, founder of Nepri, a research-based startup from Lund that enables sustainable and high-yielding agriculture through early detection of plant diseases, and Oliver Titikic, an entrepreneur and founder of his own legal practice. In total, 33 projects from Blekinge Institute of Technology, Kristianstad University, Malmö University, and Lund University are participating. Ten of the projects are funded through Lund University's Sustainability Fund and were chosen for their focus on sustainability.🌿The programme is led by our very own Nicolas Arriagada. Through the summer, we will be providing highlights of some of these inspiring student projects. Follow their journey here!

If you are a university researcher in Sweden, you might be aware that you are covered by very unique IP-protections known as by professor's privilege (lärarundantaget). But very few people know what that means in practice. So let's dive in. 💦 Read on for a short Q&A with Fredrik Engfeldt, Legal Advisor at LU Innovation who works daily on solving questions related to IP rights of researchers at Lund University. If you are interested in asking your own questions to Fredrik, he will be speaking at an open lunch seminar at Forum Medicum in Lund on Tuesday, May 21st. More info in article.
