A recent editorial published in Nature Magazine calls on researchers to stay updated and explore and validate innovative alternatives. “𝐼 𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑡, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝐼 𝑓𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑘𝑦” This is a common response that Ofer Levy, a vaccinologist at Boston Children´s Hospital, receives when talking about the 2022 groundbreaking law allowing researchers to test drug candidates on human tissue or computer models before First in Human trials. Levy has long advocated that studies in human tissue, in some cases, can be more informative than those done on animals. He says, “They still make use of animal models — just 70–80% less than the average research group”. This change challenges long-standing practices and offers numerous benefits. •𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲: Studies in human tissue can provide more relevant data than those in animal models, particularly in fields like immunology, where differences between species can give misleading results. •𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: Reducing reliance on animal testing addresses ethical concerns and emotional burdens associated with animal research. I started as a lab analyst, specializing in FACS cell analysis, and have advanced to a Scientific Advisor role now in 2024, contributing to innovative immunological research What are you most looking forward to in your new role? One of my key strengths is problem-solving. I really look forward to designing ways to help customers address their questions using our test system. What do you do when you're not working? One of my favourite activities is spending time in the Swedish wilderness, and I’ve been able to explore some really amazing places together with my family.
