The EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC), co-financed by the European Commission as part of the Large Scale Pilots (LSP) initiative, is holding its fourth General Assembly in Madrid, Spain, today and tomorrow (30-31 October) hosted by SICPA. Lotta Lundin and Lal Chandran will represent iGrant.io™ at this gathering. With the EWC Large Scale Pilot (LSP) advancing into phase 2, this assembly offers a prime opportunity to review our shared progress and shape the future of the EU Digital Identity Wallet. 🚨 Protect your business from fake payment apps As technology advances, so do the associated risks. Recently, a fake Swish app has been used to deceive restaurant owners by simulating legitimate transactions. In a recent incident in Malmö, a restaurant owner was targeted by a group using this fake app to order meals worth SEK 600. Although the payment appeared to go through, no money was transferred to the owner’s account. Despite confronting the perpetrators, the restaurant owner has not recovered the funds. ✔ How can businesses protect themselves? Like Swish, the EU digital identity wallets could face a similar issue. The requirements outlined in the recent EU Digital Identity Wallet Implementation Acts provide ways to mitigate such risks. 💡 Creating a trusted environment is crucial for merchants to verify payment authenticity before completing transactions. Key measures include: ➟ Trust lists: Implement trust lists of authorised payment apps so businesses can check if a payment originates from a certified and trusted source. ➟ Robust wallet verification: A strong wallet verification system ensures that merchants can trust the credentials and reliability of the wallet provider before processing transactions. ➟ App store and Play store controls: Ensuring only authorised apps, identified by organisation IDs, are available on platforms like the App Store and Play Store. This prevents fraudulent apps from reaching users. ➟ Merchant verification: Verified merchants can assess whether the app is genuine, relying on trusted digital wallets and identity frameworks to prevent fraud. This initiative aims to align the implementation of digital wallets across the EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC), ensuring wallet providers meet the standards and requirements outlined in the RFCs. ✷ About EWC RFC v2.0 This latest version outlines the conformance standards for EU Digital Identity Wallet providers to function effectively as holders, issuers, and verifiers.
