Are these guys building the next Nvidia? A few days ago, Nvidia surpassed Microsoft to become the company with the highest market cap in the world - a whopping $3.34 trillion (*although it has dipped slightly since then). Their dominance is primarily due to its high-performance processors, called GPU's. These chips are essential for running complex AI models and large-scale data processing tasks. Companies like Google, Meta and OpenAI all use Nvidia’s GPU's to power their AI systems. Nvidia's market share is currently greater than 80%.Who could possibly take them on? While many companies produce or design AI chips, one stands out: Etched. Unlike other companies, including Nvidia, which develop chips capable of running various AI models, Etched has taken a different route. They specialize in building chips for one specific type of AI model: Transformers. Gavin Uberti, Harvard dropout and founder and CEO of Etched, says that the whole company is a huge bet that transformers will be the dominant technology that AI runs on in the future. If not, they will be in a very bad place. But so far, their bet is playing out in their favor. Transformers used to be just for large language models, but the past year we've seen image and video models like OpenAI's Sora being powered by a transformer and it is now the dominant generative AI model architecture by far. The upside of narrowing down on transformers and burning the algorithms into their chips is performance. Uberti claims that they can get 20x more throughput and 20x lower latency vs the best GPU's from Nvidia. The result would be a cheaper, more efficient and more environmentally friendly alternative for businesses that need specialized AI, and being able to produce orders of magnitude more tokens at the same cost will open up entire vistas of new use cases. This latest iteration brings both promising advancements and sobering questions. Here are my thoughts on where it stands: Positives: 1. 👥 Fantastic with a more user-centric approach. This marks a significant shift towards more user-centric applications, potentially transforming everyday tech interactions. 2. 📉 The immediate market impact was visible as Duolingo’s stock fell by 10%, reflecting investor belief in GPT-4o's potential to make traditional language learning obsolete. The thought of making language barriers truly a thing of the past is extremely exciting. 3. 🌐 The integration of multiple modalities suggests that we're entering a new era where the term 'language model' no longer capture the full scope of these AI capabilities.With features similar to a personal tutor, GPT-4o could dramatically improve educational outcomes, making personalized learning accessible to all. Questions: 🤔 Despite the hype, the core intelligence of GPT-4o mirrors GPT-4, raising questions about whether we're seeing diminishing returns in AI evolution. 🏙 Similar to Google Duplex, while technically impressive, it remains to be seen whether such technologies will become integral to our daily routines or remain novelties.
