H2 Green Steel

What a difference a year can make! Last summer, work at the site of our green steel plant in Boden consisted mainly of groundworks and piling, with the first steel being raised in November. Since then, we have come a long way!

Spending time in nature has always been important to us. It provides an opportunity to get away from our normal workplaces, helping us build a value-driven culture that stands apart. This year's summer celebration kicked off with a nature walk, where we took the opportunity to discuss our leadership principles and enjoy a warm summer day in the woods.

What's it like to move to Boden from another part of the world? “I had an image that people here would be quiet and difficult to approach, but that’s not true at all. Everyone is so fantastically welcoming, friendly, and helpful. They greet, stop, and chat spontaneously even though we’ve never met before. We want to stay here forever," says Lynette Van Der Bijl, whose husband Johan is head of site execution at H2 Green Steel. So many colleagues have moved with their families from all over the world to be part of building the world's first large-scale green steel plant. “I’ve seen steel mills come to life before, and it’s extremely rewarding. I’m a steel girl at heart, but it’s a dirty industry. So, starting a green steel plant will be a thousand times better. I’ve been traveling around quite a bit for large industrial projects, working in both Germany, where I’m from, and the US. I moved from Pittsburgh — the city of steel in the USA — to Boden. I was so impressed by how fast the recruitment process went. It was super smooth. I also got a lot of help getting settled, and the Boden municipality even helped me find an apartment. They are great. I’m an industrial engineer, and I like the combination of engineering and business administration. Every day at H2 Green Steel brings a new challenge, but I love it. You need to be passionate about the project. I mean, we’re building the first large-scale green steel plant in the world at incredible speed — something no one else has done before.” – Janine Theele, senior lead project planning.

How tall will our steel mill be? The buildings where our melt shop will be located are now taking shape! The 60-meter-tall structure will feature a 105-meter-tall conveyor tower for transporting hot direct reduced iron directly to the melt shop. Here, the hot green iron will be combined with steel scrap and turned into molten steel before heading further along for casting, rolling, and downstream finishing. From iron ore to finished green steel, all in one place!

Our green hydrogen facility is starting to take shape! Work is moving forward on our more-than-700 megawatt electrolyzer facility. Here, we will use green electricity and water to produce green hydrogen, enabling us to slash emissions from the steelmaking process. Located a short distance from the steel mill, our electrolyzer plant will not only be the largest in Europe, it will also be one of the biggest in the world!
