After more than ten years of support from the END Fund, Rwanda has substantially and sustainably reduced its dependence on donor funds because of its comprehensive commitment to schistosomiasis elimination.
Since 2019, the Rwandan government has financed 100% of the operational costs related to mass drug administration delivery, which demonstrates the government’s leadership and has provided a beacon of sustainability for other countries to follow.
In 2020, the Deworming Innovation Fund supported Rwanda to conduct a precise disease survey to guide its new ambitious goal of interrupting the transmission of schistosomiasis. As a result, schistosomiasis has reached a threshold of elimination as a public health problem, which means prevalence has been reduced to just 1% of infections in 97% of surveyed villages. This outcome follows years of effective treatment campaigns that were the result of Rwanda's steadfast commitment to elimination.

Week two of our Sweden program took us to Roslagen – a countryside region on Sweden’s east coast full of history and charm. We made the harbor town of Öregrund our home base, and that is where the group participated in the Roslagen Clean Energy Symposium. The Symposium featured topics such as the current landscape and expected changes in the electricity demand, the energy mix in the U.S. and Sweden, the role of the state in the advancement of new clean energy technologies and energy business models, and the landscape of Swedish nuclear research. Some of the notable points that presenters made were a prediction for an increased electricity consumption over the next couple of decades due to data centers and AI expansion and an increased focus on the usage of low-carbon or carbon-free fuels for aviation and other high propulsion modes of transport. A representative from Scania Group, the major Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, talked about the company’s mission to increase its share of electric trucks. At the concluding dinner of the Symposium, the Mayor of Östhammar made a surprise appearance!
During our stay in Roslagen, we were also hosted by Northvolt (an electric vehicles battery developer and manufacturer that aims to be the leader in sustainable battery production), Sandvik Coromant (which supplies tools, tool inserts, and services to the metal cutting industry), and the UIC - Uppsala Innovation Centre (a startup incubator). At UIC we also heard from a co-founder of Enaiblers (a startup whose vision is to improve global health equity through the elimination of neglected tropical diseases through affordable AI-based diagnostics) and from the CEO of Magstrom (a startup built around the Active Magnetic Balancing technology which detects and corrects irregularities in machines such as generators). We also visited Vattenfallgymnasiet in Forsmark - a technology high school focused on electricity production with nuclear power and renewable sources such as solar, wind and hydropower.
It was an eye-opening and uplifting experience for our group to learn about all these ground-breaking ideas, disruptive technologies, and drive for discovering sustainable solutions! We are grateful to all researchers and entrepreneurs who shared their work and vision with us!
