Formula Student is the largest engineering competition for students in the world with the aim of creating better engineers by giving the students hands-on experience. Every competing team designs, manufactures and tests a vehicle with which they then compete against other teams in several different events - all of this takes place during less than one year. There are both dynamic events such as endurance and acceleration, and static events where the cost of manufacturing and the business idea of the project are presented to the judges. Overall, the car and the competitions are the means used to develop our engineering skills. At Chalmers Formula Student we strive to deliver the engineers of tomorrow. Today, we are one of the top Formula Student teams, a position we have reached through our hard and consistent work. The team consists of approximately 40 new, dedicated students each year, and we also have former team members supporting the project. We start each project with a pre-study phase where we generate the concept of the car from which we then develop our design. When the design is finished, we start manufacturing the car until we finally test it before heading to the competition.

Anna Wrennfors is a Project Engineer in the CFS24 team, part of the Suspension subgroup. In this post, Anna talks briefly about her experience in designing and manufacturing parts for Freja, this year's car. "I’m responsible for the design and implementation of the pedal box and the mechanical components of the autonomous braking system in the CFS24 car. In designing the pedal box, a significant amount of time and effort went into optimizing it to ensure it could accommodate all our drivers comfortably while also integrating it with the autonomous system. This involved a lot of planning and adjustments to achieve the best possible fit and functionality. After the design phase, we moved on to manufacturing the parts. However, assembling these components proved challenging. Initially, the parts did not fit together as expected, leading to several iterations and adjustments. It was after the third iteration that everything finally fit together correctly. With the successful assembly, we were able to proceed with testing the system on our test bench. This testing included both the pneumatic and hydraulic systems, ensuring that the entire setup functioned properly. And now the whole assembly is mounted into the car and ready for testing!" Wheel-to-wheel racing like never before 🏎️ This past week we had the pleasure of participating in FSAA’s virtual competition, featuring wheel-to-wheel racing like never seen before in Formula Student. We now understand why - chaos during the first lap of the endurance event unfortunately set our driver Tim back a few places. Fortunately, he managed to recover to a good 8th place 🚀 Overall, our drivers managed to achieve a 9th place for the Chalmers Formula Student team out of a total of 46 teams competing 🎖️ A big thank you to Formula Student Alpe Adria for hosting this event, we’re hoping for a chance to get revanche next year! And another thank you to Formula UC3M for the sim racing model of the formula student car, we hope our livery did it justice 🫱🏽🫲🏼
