The Philippines is considered one of the world’s most richly endowed mineral resources countries, estimated to have about $1 trillion worth of untapped copper, gold, nickel, zinc, and silver reserves. Only 5% of these reserves have been explored, and 3% are covered by mining contracts. Recognizing the immense potential of the mining industry in the Philippines, Business Sweden and the Embassy of Sweden in Manila organized the Pioneering the Green Transition: Advancing Sustainable Mining forum on June 18 in Manila. Key Insights: 1. Technology adoption and collaborative partnerships are crucial in driving sustainable growth in the mining industry. Technology such as the use of renewable energy and carbon capture plays an important role in driving the mining industry's reduction of environmental footprint thus contributing towards a more sustainable community and environment. 2. Digitalization and automation play a transformative role boosting efficiency, productivity, and more importantly, safety in mining. Stable digital connections and wireless innovations are important when it comes to the safety of miners which include 3D mapping and remote-controlled machinery. 3. Academe plays an important role in fostering innovation in the mining industry and partnerships between mining companies and the academe and research institutions would enable knowledge exchange and innovation in mining. Sweden's triple helix model covers this set-up allowing the country's mining cluster to keep sustainable and environmentally friendly practices while maintaining global competitiveness.
