Hospital-acquired infections (HAI), also known as healthcare-associated infections, are infections that occur during the care process in a hospital or healthcare facility and are not present or incubating at the time of admission. These infections represent the most frequent adverse events during care. In veterinary medicine, 70% of HAIs are preventable. The most common HAIs are bacterial contamination of intravenous catheters and surgical site infections. Despite this, hand hygiene remains underestimated as a key factor in preventing HAIs.
