🌍 Today we are launching the Fossil Detox Report, outlining the current state of the climate transition and the necessary steps to meet net-zero targets and mitigate climate impacts. The shift from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials to renewable and low-carbon alternatives represents one of the most significant challenges of current times. The report highlights the urgent need for action and for a comprehensive approach to mitigate climate change and to secure a reliable supply of clean energy. The climate transition demands strong political will, public engagement and visionary leadership. In the report, we provide guidance for governments and industry stakeholders on how to close the implementation gap and scale up the solutions we know exists. "Ultimately, transitioning away from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials is not just a technical or economic challenge - it is a societal imperative," says Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO of AFRY. At AFRY, we believe that it is possible to transition towards a low-carbon economy while also promoting economic growth by implementing innovative technologies and forward-thinking policies. Much of the needed technology to decarbonise our industry and energy systems is already available today, but the question remains: how do we close the implementation gap? Phasing out fossil fuels and combating climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. But most of the technology and know-how needed is already in place to transform both the energy system and our industrial processes. Now it’s about time to scale up available technology to ensure a just transition for all. “Ultimately, transitioning away from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials is not just a technical or economic challenge – it is a societal imperative,” says Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO of AFRY. Our latest publication, The Fossil Detox Report, delves into the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels and explores crucial areas we have identified for making this happen. We have also identified nine measures within policy, finance, and innovation, that we believe will accelerate the transition in these areas. Curious about the how? 💡 Forest-based product innovation will continue to deliver new solutions to the climate challenge. Forest-based products typically have a considerably lower carbon footprint and fewer emissions than fossil-based alternatives. They provide a practical solution for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and climate impacts throughout their life cycles while fostering a more circular economy. Current areas of application for forest resources include: 🌲 Wood products  📦 Paper and board 🧵 Cellulosic textile fibres 🧪 Biofuels and biochemicals A sustained emphasis on cutting-edge innovation in Europe will allow forest raw materials to be utilised in an even broader array of applications in the future. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d8h5BDuj #makingfuture #bioindustry #sustainability #decarbonisation

Last week AFRY Management Consulting attended the CRU Steel Decarbonisation Summit in Stockholm. Steel industry leaders were brought together to discuss how to achieve decarbonisation of steel production and the impact of new technologies and regulations, such as CBAM, and changes in energy sources, including hydrogen. AFRY’s Director of Power-to-X Pedro Raposo presented AFRY’s practical experience of delivering large scale Power-to-X and hydrogen (H2) projects. Pedro highlighted the challenges faced and success factors needed to implement electrolyser projects for green hydrogen-based steelmaking. Key takeaways from the event include: ⚡ Electricity will be the key lever of steel decarbonisation and competitiveness The steel industry’s energy needs will increase sizeably due to technology changes and constraints on key raw materials supply (e.g. scrap and high-grade iron ore). Energy sources will switch from being fossil-based (e.g. coal) to becoming renewable and more variable and unpredictable (e.g. wind and solar). The most competitive locations for decarbonised steelmaking will be those which can obtain low cost 24/7 renewable energy supplies (RES). 📖 No single steel decarbonisation solution or definition There is still no consensus on a “green steel” definition, with varying degrees of low emissions steel available and planned. This reflects the fact that a range of decarbonisation options become feasible over time, including greater use of scrap and RES, hydrogen, CCS, and biomass, and the options available to steelmakers vary greatly by location. This transition will result in a shift in global steel and raw material trade flows, and reduced integration between iron- and steel-making. ✅ Green premium for steel exists, but it varies greatly by buyer Participants reported some evidence of already securing a premium for green steel, mostly in the automotive sector and Europe, with buyers reporting a high level of carbon abatement per € compared to other low carbon materials. Others reported mixed responses to a green premium in alternative applications and regions, with limited ability to pass on additional costs to end users. ⌛ H2-steelmaking projects at risk of cost and time escalation Large-scale H2 electrolyser projects are complex and experiencing delays. Development plans should build in flexibility through H2 storage, transitioning DRI plants from gas to H2, and electrolyser modularisation. Developers need solid implementation strategies with strong cost and change controls and front-end engineering. AFRY offers services to enable steel decarbonisation, including engineering and market advisory services across renewable energy, H2, CCS, biomass/bioenergy, and steel. The Fossil Detox Report – launching on Monday, 23 September. 🌍 During the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, world leaders and experts convened to address climate change, and for the first time in history, nearly every country agreed to phase out fossil fuels. Two other important outcomes from COP28 were to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency, both will have far-reaching implications for the energy as well as industrial transition. The direction that the world leaders have set is crystal clear. But the question then arises – how do we do this? In connection with Climate Week in New York starting on Monday, we are launching our newest publication, highlighting critical areas for the transition and key enablers that we believe are crucial for the transition to accelerate. So, stay tuned! #makingfuture
