The Edmund de Waal and Axel Salto exhibition: Playing with Fire Renowned artist Edmund de Waal has curated an exhibition highlighting the works of celebrated Danish ceramicist Axel Salto, recognized as a leading figure in twentieth-century ceramic art. This exhibition unites numerous ceramic works by Salto from the CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art in Denmark and The Tangen Collection at Kunstsilo in Norway - home to the world's largest assembly of Nordic modernist art. While the exhibition mainly features Salto's creations, it also includes several pieces by de Waal himself. Starting at CLAY Museum, the exhibition will tour to the Kunstsilo in September 2024 before its final stop at The Hepworth Wakefield in West Yorkshire in 2025. Light Bureau is involved in all sites, meeting the challenge of working with the equipment available at the three venues whilst trying to maintain a consistent experience for the visitors. We achieved this by careful planning and by being present to focus and adjust the lighting in person. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between EDMUND DE WAAL LIMITED, CLAY Keramikmuseum Danmark and Kunstsilo in Norway. Photo: Ole Akhøj

Three of our projects are nominated for Norsk Lyspris 2024! ✨ We are thrilled to see our projects recognised among the impressive nominations, and we are eager to share the stories behind them. Our interior lighting work for Skimuseet in Norway beautifully illuminates the exhibition on the rich history of skiing and polar exploration, and creates an engaging and welcoming experience for visitors. Our installation Slidestimen, nominated in the open class category, is located in the atrium of the Kristiansund Campus. This installation mimics a shoal of herring, drawing inspiration from the region's abundant maritime heritage, creating a unique and thought-provoking space. Additionally, the Begna Bru exterior lighting project highlights the beauty and architectural significance of the historical railway bridge after nightfall and provides a harmonious balance between function, aesthetics, and environmental considerations. Each project represents a fusion of technical expertise and creative vision, and we are proud to contribute to the cultural and historical landscape through our work. A heartfelt thanks to all the collaborators involved in these projects! 💛 Read more about the nominations at Lyskultur: https://bit.ly/3A3h8zQ #lightingdesign #norsklyspris

Meet our two speakers at Elmässan in Stockholm next week! 👋 Elmässan is the largest event in the Nordics for electrical installation, lighting, and fiber, with hundreds of exhibitors and plenty of seminars and conferences. Two of our lighting designers will share insights from their expertise. 💡 16th of October 11-11.30: Good design is inherently sustainable Daniel Hodierne leads a seminar on integrating sustainability into the design process, exploring whether using fewer materials and consuming less electricity can still yield excellent results. Daniel brings a wealth of expertise to this discussion as a lighting designer with vast experience in creating top-tier lighting designs for both private and public spaces. 💡 17th of October 11-11.30: Betriot – Lighting Security IoT Joakim Rydén will discuss Betriot, a website created by Light Bureau in partnership with Stiftelsen Tryggare Sverige and Solna stad. King's College London was founded in 1828 by a group of eminent politicians and was granted a Royal Charter by King George IV in 1829. The college has attracted some of the brightest engineering minds over its nearly 200-year history and proudly counts many Nobel Prize Laureates among its alumni. The number of buildings and faculties is extensive, but its central facility has always has been the Strand Campus. In 2014, Light Bureau was commissioned by architects Hall McKnight to contribute specialist expertise to the Strand Campus project. The project involved a complete refurbishment of the Quadrangle building beneath the central courtyard. The project encompasses a public realm aspect and features lighting for both new and historic structures. Additionally, it includes flexible study spaces, common rooms, laboratories, and workshops. In these underground labs, where daylight is scarce, a thoughtfully designed lighting scheme is crucial to the success of the experimental, research, and maker spaces. 💡 Photo: Johan Dehlin

Sildestimen - a luminous installation celebrating the coastal culture of Kristiansund. 🐟 Campus Kristiansund is an important urban development project established on Devoldholmen in the centre of Kristiansund, Norway. It serves as a collaborative hub for higher education, research, and innovation. Our light installation "Sildestimen" (shoal of herring) is designed for the heart of the building, providing functional lighting, enhancing the architectural ambiance, and serving as a strong feature element within the city's new landmark. The installation is designed to accentuate natural light and material textures during the day while transforming the evening gloom into an intimate and magical atmosphere. By varying the heights and clustering of the fixtures, the installation mimics a shoal of herring, reflecting light and creating dynamic visual movement. The concept of "Sildestimen" draws inspiration from Kristiansund's maritime heritage. In addition to the installation, we have designed the architectural lighting for the atrium—the heart of the Campus. This lighting enhances the atrium's characteristics, making it a signature space. Campus Kristiansund was ready for handover at the end of August 2024.

In 2022, the Hannes Snellman law firm began renovations to modernise its central Stockholm office, including upgrading the lighting. Ensuring optimal workplace lighting to enhance alertness and well-being among employees was a key priority in our work. The meeting rooms have been enhanced to exude a luxurious ambiance, adaptable for both physical and virtual meetings. Significant attention was given to selecting decorative fixtures that also deliver excellent working light over the meeting tables. To make the atrium the company's central focus, the lighting is designed to be welcoming throughout the day. It adapts for larger presentations and transforms in character and color as the workday shifts to after-hours events and evening celebrations. Vollebekk Torg - a circular and social project. 💡 Vollebekk Torg in Oslo is designed to be a social and inviting meeting place, serving as the vibrant heart of the neighborhood. The square's design highlights sustainable landscape architecture and lighting, promoting an active urban life even after dark. Our lighting concept "Reflections" is crafted from Vollebekk's comprehensive lighting strategy, designed to seamlessly blend lighting with the landscape. This concept builds upon the site's colorful identity, adding a unique element that enriches the square's visual appeal. The square features several elements enhanced by bespoke lighting. An excess piece of marble and glass from the facade cladding of the National Museum has been repurposed as a long table with backlighting, providing dramatic illumination in the seating area. Low columns positioned near the table tennis area adds a more intimate and domestic feel, harmonizing with the area's color palette. The system provides two lighting settings: a warm, gentle light for nighttime ambiance and an energy-efficient mode that adjusts the intensity to match the surrounding light. The first part of the square opened in the summer of 2023, and the rest will be completed by 2026.

Östermalmstorg, a lively and central square in the heart of Stockholm, is currently undergoing renovations to enhance safety and accessibility while preserving its historical charm. We will see enhancements including more seating, new paving, and a greener square enriched with additional trees. 🌳 The square's new lighting is carefully tailored to accommodate its varied functions and needs, improving traffic safety, security, and spatial perception while highlighting its architectural significance. The new light fixtures, initially developed for a lighting project in Kungsträdgården in 2020, are designed by us and manufactured by ateljé Lyktan, with poles provided by Mormast. The completion of the new square is scheduled for the summer of 2025. The landscape design illustration is created by Karavan landskapsarkitekter AB.

A journey through the history of skiing. 🎿 To mark its 100th anniversary, the Ski Museum in Holmenkollen, Norway, has undergone a remarkable transformation, unveiling an engaging and experience-focused permanent exhibition. The exhibition narrates the history of skiing and polar exploration, and artfully simulates a snowy landscape, with ski tracks elegantly winding among the showcased artefacts. Together with the exhibition architects, Light Bureau has developed a lighting concept that highlights and enhances these stories. The design of the lighting system is a work of art in itself, where the metal ceiling with its reflective vertical surfaces creates an atmospheric ambience reminiscent of the variations in light throughout the day, and mirrors the frequent weather changes in Norwegian nature. The lighting system is built around a grid ceiling that not only serves a functional role but also acts as part of the visual structure of the exhibition. The project prioritizes sustainability in both material selection and energy-efficient lighting, and emphasis is placed on ensuring good visibility and orientation for all visitors, regardless of visual ability. The carefully curated lighting transcends its technical role, becoming an essential component of the experience. It elevates the museum's narratives and creates a memorable atmosphere for every visitor. ✨ Photo: Tomasz Majewski Special thanks to: SixSides AS Skiforeningen & Skimuseet
