This July, we are presenting tips to improve your scientific writing. Tip #4: Simplify your terms! Scientists often think that academic writing can only use formal words and phrases. However, these words are often longer than their less formal counterparts and can add an unnecessary level of complexity to your writing. Sometimes, simple is better. Try these substitutions in your next writing project to make your writing clear and concise. This July, we are presenting tips to improve your scientific writing. Tip #3: Know when to use "amount of" and "number of"! “Amount of” refers to things that can’t be counted while “number of” refers to things that can be counted. But sometimes this depends on the context. For example, you might have a large amount of data made up of a large number of individual data points, such as temperature measurements. Although concepts such as “money” or “time” can’t be counted, they can be made up of individual units, such as dollars or hours, which can be counted. Confused? Not sure if you’ve used these two terms correctly in your latest writing project? Visit advansci-research.com to find out how our experienced medical writers can help. #medicalwriting #researchconsultant #scientificwriting

This July, we are presenting tips to improve your scientific writing. Tip #2: Know the grammatical rules behind numbers! In scientific writing, you are likely to encounter numbers. Did you know that numbers are also subject to the rules of grammar? 1. Numbers at the beginning of sentences should be capitalized. 2. There should be a space between numbers and other words. 3. Numbers below ten can be spelled out - or not. Just be consistent! This July, we will be presenting tips to improve your scientific writing. Tip #1: Be concise! Unnecessary words and phrases make your text longer than it needs to be. Simple replacements can make your writing clear and concise. How many of these lengthy phrases are lurking in your manuscripts and grant applications? We are all prone to bias, whether we like it or not. The human brain is very good at finding evidence that lines up with our expectations (confirmation bias), finding patterns in random data (apophenia), assuming that events were predictable (hindsight bias), and avoiding options with missing information (ambiguity bias). These tendencies can be detrimental to good research practice. In order to protect our data from our own brains, we must control for these biases. How do you control for cognitive biases in your own research? #BiasInScience #ResearchConsulting #GoodResearchPractice #ResearchIntegrity

We recently celebrated our graduation from the Ideon BUILD program! BUILD is a 9-month incubation program designed to help startups transform great ideas into successful businesses. We began with an idea for a web application to guide biomedical researchers throughout their projects, from study design to accurate data reporting. Throughout the BUILD program, we've refined our concept, received feedback from researchers, and continuously improved our plan. We are now excited to announce that the first version of our web application will be launching soon! Want to be among the first researchers to try it? Contact us via our website to sign up: https://lnkd.in/dY4DnXse. A big thank you to Ideon Science Park for all the support and the amazing connections we've made. We look forward to future collaborations! #LifeScienceInnovation #ScientificResearch #Ideon #BioTechInnovation

Sometimes, it seems like science has developed a language of its own. While terms like "Eppendorfs" or “spinning down” might be common in the lab, it's important to recognize that they might not convey the precision needed in a scientific manuscript. In scientific writing, clarity is paramount. When translating your research results into a manuscript, aim for precision and avoid casual lab slang. Doing so will ensure that your findings are communicated accurately and professionally. Need help enhancing the precision of your scientific writing? Reach out to our writing consultants at www.advansci-research.com for tailored guidance. #writingtips #science #research #scientificwriting #medicalwriting #labtalk #scienceslang #scientificlanguage
