Porvoo (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈporʋoː]; Swadish: Borgå [ˈbɔrɡo]) is a ceety an a municipality situatit on the soothren coast o Finland approximately 50 kilometre (30 mi) east o Helsinki. History

[eedit | eedit soorce]

Porvoo wis first mentioned in documents in the early 14t century, an Porvoo wis gien ceety richts aroond 1380, even tho accordin tae some soorces the ceety wis foondit in 1346. The auld ceety o Porvoo wis formally disestablisht an the new ceety o Porvoo foondit in 1997 whan the ceety o Porvoo an the Landwart municipality o Porvoo wur consolidatit.[6] Whan Swaden lost the ceety o Viborg tae Roushie in 1721, the episcopal seat wis muivit tae Porvoo. At this time, Porvoo wis the seicont lairgest ceety in Finland. Efter the conquest o Finland bi Roushie airmies in 1808 Swaden haed tae cede Finland tae Roushie in 1809 (the Treaty o Fredrikshamn). The Diet o Porvoo in 1809 wis a laundmerk in the History o Finland. The Tsar Alexander I confirmit the new Finnish constitution (which wis essentially the Swadish constitution frae 1772), an made Finland an autonomous Grand Duchy.

The Porvoo Common Statement is a report issued at the conclusion o theological conversations bi offeecial representatives o fower Anglican Kirks an aicht Nordic an Baltic Lutheran Kirks in 1989–1992. It establisht the Porvoo Communion, sae namit efter the Porvoo Cathedral whaur the Eucharist wis celebratit on the feenal Sunday o the conversations leadin tae the Statement.

The toun receivit its name frae a Swadish firth fortress near the river Porvoonjoki which flows throu the toun. The name Porvoo is the Fennicisit version o the Swadish name (Borgå) an its pairts o borg meanin "castle" an å "river".[7]

Urban development

[eedit | eedit soorce]

The toun is famed for its "Old Town" (Gamla Stan in Swedish), a dense mediaeval street pattern wi predominantly widden houses. The Old Town came close tae bein demolished in the 19t century bi a new urban plan for the ceety. The plan wis cancelled due tae a popular resistance headed bi Count Louis Sparre

The central pynt o the auld toun is the medieval, stone an brick Porvoo Cathedral which gae its name tae the Porvoo Communion – an inter-kirk agreement atween a nummer o Anglican an Lutheran denominations. The cathedral wis damaged bi fire on 29 Mey 2006: the ruif wis totally destroyed but the interior is largely intact. A drunken youth haed played wi fire at the kirk, unaware o recent tarwork an nearby tarcontainers, accidentally causin a lairge fire. He wis later sentenced tae a short prison term an restitutions o 4.3 million Euro.[8]

The reid-coloured widden storage buildings on the riverside are a proposed UNESCO world heritage site. Already bi the early 19t century the authorities understood the value o the auld toun, an sae wi the need for growthe a plan wis made for a 'new toun' biggit adjacent tae the auld toun, follaein a grid plan but wi houses an aa biggit in wid.

New Housing, Porvoo, bi architect Tuomas Siitonen

Bi the end o the 20t century thare wis pressure tae develop the essentially untouched wastren side o the river. Thare wis concern that growthe wad necessitate the construction o a seicont brig across the river intae the toun, sicweys putting further strain on the widden toun. An architectral competeetion wis held in 1990, the winnin entry o which proposed building the seicont brig. Plans for the wastren side o the river hae progressed unner the direction o architect Tuomas Siitonen, an baith a vehicle brig an a pedestrian brig hae been biggit. The design for new housing is based on a typology derived frae the auld store houses on the opposite side o the river. Yet anither new development entails the construction o a lairge business pairk cried Keeng's Gate (Kuninkaanportti in Finnish, Kungsporten in Swedish), which is presently unner construction.
