Nokturnal Mortum stairtit as a daith metal baund Suppuration in 1991,[1] then turned tae black metal an chyngit thair name tae Crystalline Darkness but "had tae chynge the name back in 1993/94 tae Nocturnal Mortum acause there awready existit a baund wi that name in wastren unnergrund."[2] Then the baund "chyngit the letter so that we wadna find a baund wi the same name again like it wis the case wi Crystaline Darkness."[2] Nokturnal Mortum gained thair first Wastren recognition wi the release o thair album Goat Horns, thair seicont full lenth album, notable for haein twa keyboardists play on the album, aften on the same sang, an for mixin traditional Ukrainian muisic wi black metal. As traditional instrumentation gained in significance an the leerical concept muivit away frae black metal’s patterns, the newer releases are clessifee'd as pagan metal.

The baund’s first albums wur released throu The End Records an (as licence pressings) throu Nuclear Blast,[3] but the label an baund separatit efter releasin the album NeChrist an a re-release o the “Lunar Poetry” demo acause o the baund’s ideology: "We haed a contract wi The End Records but it wis broken. We hae different points o view. They didna like oor policy, we didna like the way they dae business. They awe us some money. That wis enough for a conflict."[2]
