Friesland (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfrislɑnt]; Wast Frisian: Fryslân, pronoonced [frislɔ̃ːn]), historically kent as Frisie, is a province in the north o the Netherlands an pairt o the auncient, mair muckle airt o Frisie.
Till the end o 1996, the province bore Friesland as its offeecial name. In 1997 this Dutch name lost its offeecial status tae the Frisie Fryslân. Housomeiver, Friesland remains in common uisage, bein the Dutch name for the province.
Friesland haes 646,000 indwallers (2010) an its caipital is Leeuwarden (Wast Frisie: Ljouwert), wi 91,817 indwallers, in the centre o the province.
