The Alto Orinoco Municipality is ane o the seiven municipalities (municipios) that mak up the soothren Venezuelan state o Amazonas an, accordin tae the 2011 census bi the Naitional Institute o Statistics o Venezuela, the municipality haes a population o 12,687.[1] The toun o La Esmeralda is the shire toun o the Alto Orinoco.[2]
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]Efter the dissolution o the Spaingie Commission o Territorial Limits bi order o the Croun in 1760, Iturriaga an Solano returned tae Spain an presentit tae the Coort a series o proposals tae ensur Spaingie control ower their possessions o Orinoco an Río Negro. Oot o these proposals came the decision tae create separate commands. On 17 Mairch 1767, Diez de la Fuente arrivit in Esmeralda accompaniet bi 60 Spaniards an the Caciques Wadena an Wasaha, who led a group o 3,000 natives. Wi this, the redevelopment o Esmeralda commencit.
The municipality is recognisit as a territorial diveesion bi the govrenment o Antonio Guzmán Blanco on 10 Dizember 1880 o wha is nou the Amazonas State.
Demographics
[eedit | eedit soorce]The Alto Orinoco Municipality, accordin tae a 2007 population estimate bi the Naitional Institute o Statistics o Venezuela, haes a population o 17,797 (up frae 15,281 in 2000). This amoonts tae 12.5% o the state's population.[3] The municipality's population density is 0.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (0.78/sq mi).[4]
Govrenment
[eedit | eedit soorce]The mayor o the Alto Orinoco Municipality is Jaime Turon, re-electit on 31 October 2004 wi 40% o the vote.[5][6] The municipality is dividit intae five pairishes: Caipital Alto Orinoco, Huachamacare, Marawaka, Mavaca, an Sierra Parima. Prior to December 18, 1997, Alto Orinoco Municipality haed anerly ane pairish.[2]
