📕It's a bittersweet month as we wrap up six years of embedded research advisory & client-focused research for IGNITE with 60 Decibels and Tanager. 🤝Through this partnership, Laterite led M&E and research support to IGNITE’s stakeholders - African institutions focused on the agricultural sector. We led four mixed methods research projects in Tanzania and Ethiopia to generate evidence to support their gender and nutrition-sensitive agriculture programming. We also led a qualitative study in Nigeria to understand how time savings gained by the mechanization of farming tasks are being reallocated and if women or men are enjoying the benefits of that extra time. Laterite’s contribution to IGNITE also included 7 published case studies sharing lessons learned on gender and nutrition topics, like how to capture women’s voices in agricultural research. Historical data for Secondary 3 students in Rwanda shows a persistent divide in the pass-rates between girls and boys in STEM subjects. Our colleagues Dimitri Stoelinga and Ilse Peeters Salazar looked into a wealth of data provided by the Rwandan Ministry of Education to investigate why. Their main conclusions are: 🏫 The gender gap in STEM is better explained by child-level factors compared to school-level factors 💡The gender gap is wider in high-performing schools 🍎 The higher the proportion of female teachers in teaching staff, the smaller the gap between girls and boys on STEM subjects Read the full policy brief: https://bit.ly/STEMexams #Education #Rwanda #STEM #Examinations #Research

Today is the last day of the 2024 Africa Evidence Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The team is glad to be a part of the event and share some of the work we're doing across East Africa. 👉 Kenya Research Director Dale Barnhart, ScD presents how we used geospatial matching techniques as part of our evaluation of the Women's Empowerment through Gender Transformative Market Opportunities (WEGO) program, evaluating whether CARE Ethiopia's Farmer Field and Business Schools improve women's empowerment and household income. (2nd photo) 👉 Research Analyst Ester Diarz talks about the evaluation we're conducting on CARE Tanzania's Farmer Field and Business Schools. We're trying to understand whether integrating care work modules into the curriculum can shift social norms and redistribute care work within agricultural households.
