  one of my favourite things about Fingon is that ‘Utulie’n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatari! Utulie’n aurë’ is in Quenya. It is possible these were words borne of sudden emotion, and subsequently in his native tongue; it is also possible he used Quenya out of spite towards Thingol, who, after all, was not there to impose his ban.

  new puppy started relentlessly vomiting and having increasingly bloody diarrhea all afternoon and we have now been at the pet ER for four hours and i am sad, bro!!!!! parvo test was negative, at least. hoping she’ll recover soon. 😭

  update: after getting some meds and fluids, she’s back to very perky energy levels today (and NOT enjoying the fact that the vet said to take it easy for a few days. doesn’t he know that she is an adventurer???), and hopefully a bland diet will help to settle her stomach! fingers crossed. thank you for the well wishes, friends. 💛

  hey have you seen a small cut of lightweight lime green cotton anywhere? It was in this drawer and I don’t remember moving it, but I emptied the drawer 3 times and I looked in between all the folds and it has vanished and I’m very confused.

  I don’t need it for anything, I just want to move it to a box with similar fabrics.

  Due to a long history of [REDACTED] I have a chronic anxiety of doing something “wrong” and having [INSERT ANY PERSON HERE] get “mad at” me, and in trying to get over it I have developed a calming method that has worked rather well in extreme flareups if you don’t mind appearing a little unhinged

  Step 1: Get a scrap of paper

  Step 2: Consider the thing you are about to do

  Step 3: Write down what you are about to do and why it makes sense

  Step 4: Put it in your pocket, tape it under a desk, in your bra, wherever- Somewhere nearby so that it will be there when you need it

  Step 5: If someone DOES “get mad at” you, retrieve the note and give it to them

  Whether the “angry” person is reasonable or not, you can rest assured in the evidence that your actions made sense and were the best you could do with the information you had at the time.

  Also, because it is always very very funny to have a handwritten response to something very specific that a person hasn’t even said yet, you may find your anxiety lightened by the possibility of pulling off an excellent bit, so even if the bad thing DOES happen, you’ll still have something to laugh about later

  *I am aware that this is a trauma thing. Yes, my clothes are full of paper. No, I don’t intend to stop. Yes, it has happened. No, they don’t always laugh. Yes, it’s still very funny every time

  you’ve got 2 admit that the oft repeated command to “touch grass” in itself illustrates a great disconnect from the tru wholesomeness of the offline world. unless you meant a kind of wild grass, a lovely tassel cord rush or even the humble rattlesnake grass. but we know that’s not what they mean. to the chronically online, grass = lawn and nothing more. and a lawn is an abomination on par with the worst brainworms big online has to offer. touching a lawn will not help you. You’ve got to go injure yourself on some swordgrass for god’s sake

  Somebody might have pointed this out before, but how exactly did Aang & Co. get back to the fire nation with a defeated Ozai in tow?

  Awkward bison ride in the saddle listening to him rant about ethnic genocide? Did they strap him to one of Appa’s legs? Dangle him from a basket? Leave him on a cliff for somebody else to come collect??

  The bison was already at the Fire Nation! Katara and Zuko flew to the Capital City on Appa. The only option for the gaang to get out of that giant rock pillar forest was for Sokka and Toph to repair any damage to the airship Suki commandeered and fly back.

  They probably just let Ozai sit on a chair in the employee lounge for the ride back. Probably didn’t even bother to tie him up, since, as Sokka loudly pointed out, he wasn’t a threat to anyone anymore.

  Would Ozai’s introduction to metalbending be when Toph causually reconstructs a fallen airship in front of him while shit talking Sokka and/or Ozai? 

  Because talk about a terrifying thing to encounter on the heels of losing your bending. Four children just took down you and your entire fleet and as far as you can tell two of them are borderline gods. 

  (I think Toph would need to be talked out of enthusiastically mounting him on the front of the airship like a figurehead on a boat. She would appreciate the symbolism, and the screaming.)

  Yes, Ozai’s introduction to this half of the Gaang would be watching a fifteen-year-old walk a lap around and then figure out how to repair the ship that took dozens of his best minds to design, instructing a twelve-year-old how to reshape massive swaths of metal with her bare hands as casually as Ozai would instruct his tailors to lower the hem of his sleeve. The other girl keeps playing with a steel fan in front of him. Is she trying to intimidate him? He’s already intimidated enough. Where did she even get that fan, though?

  Okay but Sokka’s leg is super duper broken at this point, right? So he isn’t walking a lap around the airship and then figuring out how to repair it at a glance – The Avatar is like, floating him around on a throne of stone, or airbending him regally around so that his feet never need to touch the ground.

  And then this little gremlin of a human, who is displaying the greatest bending prowess Ozai has ever seen outside if another twelve-year-old handing him his own ass a little bit ago, is listening to what this random Water Tribe kid has to say. 

  Queue the existential crisis of Ozai’s life over who this all-powerful teen must be, and what kind of bending prowess he has to have that the Avatar is serving him as a palanquin bearer

  The thing about the wild replies to posts that go around talking about fandom misogyny is that, at least for me, I did have to make an active choice to care about female characters.

  There’s less of them and they are often written with a lot less to work with and it’s easier to focus on dude characters. But I had to look at myself and wonder why I was willing to read pages and pages of meta and fic and headcanons for Julian Bashir when I wasn’t interested in the same for Jadzia Dax when they have a similar amount of screentime. Why I wasn’t interested in Captain Janeway when she’s the lead of her show. Yes, writers are often sexist, but the writers were ableist and homophobic and so on with a million male characters, but I was willing to put the work in to love them. At some point, the viewer/reader/listener’s own sexism plays a part in their willingness to engage with a character.

  So I had to actively choose to seek out those meta and fic and headcanons for female characters. And it is significantly harder to find than it is for male characters, because most of fandom hadn’t questioned their own sexism. But what little of it there is out there is often just as high quality and interesting as the stuff I was already looking at, if not more so because there’s the added dimension of fighting against the writers’ misogyny, which often requires even more engagement and creativity.

  It was, for me, a process that I had to continually work on to care about women characters as much as I did guy ones. But it got easier the more effort I put in. And now those posts about how no one cares about female characters are very relatable to me.

  But the way people respond to those posts, it’s always “I can’t change the fact that the writers are sexist! It’s an immutable fact that female characters are less interesting! You’re attacking me personally over something that I can’t change! And actually, you’re the sexist for not realizing how terrible these female characters are and how you’re victimizing me asking me to care about them!”

  Besties, I promise it is something you can change. You just have to put the work in

  

  And guess what! It is exactly the same with the Black characters and other characters of color. Back during Racefail in ‘09 I spent a lot of time reading posts and thinking about things, and working through my gut reactions to the conversation. Combined with that and regular complaints from fans of color pointing out just how much characters of color (especially Black people) were under-represented in fandom, and I decided to do better. I started intentionally seeking out stories about black people and people of color, and I started writing more stories focused on characters of color. I challenged myself to come up with (at least) one fic idea for a Black character in every episode or movie where a Black character appeared. (Obviously, I didn’t write them all; the point was to think creatively.) And when I was choosing what books to read or shows to watch, to weigh the number of characters of color as part of my criteria. When signing up for ficathons, I weighted my requests and offers to characters of color and female characters.

  There’s always more stuff out there that I could love than I could possibly experience in a lifetime; there’s always more things I could sign up for than I have time and energy for. I have to narrow things down somehow. Why not make “supporting characters of color and female characters” part of my winnowing criteria?

  The important thing is not to do this in an “eat your vegetables” kind of way, where you’re dragging your feet and complaining to yourself about it. The point is to love these characters. To inspire joy in yourself and in other people. It’s not that I stopped reading about or watching white characters; I just started seeking out Black characters and other characters of color and female characters to add. And over the long haul, it made a large difference in my ways of reading and watching, and it made a large difference in my fandom engagement. And I have loved everything that’s come out of it.

  We don’t have to stay where we start from. We can grow and change. We can be better, and we can have a lot of fun along the way.

  I think, sort of in addition the racism and sexism on a personal level, it’s like… if you come into a brand new space, like coming into fandom for the first time, and you consume a piece of content, and think, wow, I really liked that! you’re going to file that away in your brain as “this is the sort of thing that I like”. And then naturally, when you seek out new content in that space, you specifically seek out the things that you know that you like. And if your first exposure to fandom was like, some meta about a white male character, or a slash fic, or something, you’re naturally going to seek out more of that because hey, I liked that, I should find more content like that that I will enjoy. You’re implicitly biased by whatever is the first thing you happened upon - there might be other, completely different stuff out there that it turns out you like better, but you never went in search of it because you didn’t yet have the experience of liking it, and you didn’t have the experience of liking it because you didn’t go in search of it. And because the way that fandom overwhelmingly focuses on white men, probably everyone’s first fandom thing that they happen upon randomly is some white man content.

  So regularly seeking out stuff that is different than the majority of things that you’ve liked so far, which is not the intuitive way to find more things that you like, can actually help you discover that you actually do, genuinely, like things that you’ve never considered that you might like. Like, my first exposure to fic was, as you’d expect, sex, and at that time I liked the fic, so I thought, well, I like these stories about sex, I should find more of them. So for a long time I did that, and it actually took me a stupidly long time to figure out that I liked the fics without sex better than the ones with sex, because for so long I had filed those away as “stuff that I probably won’t be interested in”. And that first fic that I read that I liked, that convinced me that I would like more stuff like that? I really dislike it now, honestly. Bottom-tier fic, 1/10, would scroll past on AO3. Even stuff that really is stuff that wouldn’t interest you that much can seem fun and enjoyable when the genre is new and shiny to you. For all you know, the first fandom content you enjoyed might actually be the least enjoyable fandom content for you. But you’ll never know if you only ever seek out content that you’ve liked in the past.

  like i’m sorry but we as a fandom have to stay firm on our anti-AI values. we cannot suddenly start giving AI a pass when it’s something we “want to see” like destiel kisses. it’s not suddenly fine. we’re not going to start using AI to make fanfic scenes come to life or audio AI to make characters “say” stuff we want to hear. you have GOT to be firm on your anti-AI stance. if you start making exceptions then suddenly anything will fly. fandom is for real art and creations made by real people. no AI fanfics. no AI art. no AI rendered “bonus” scenes. no AI audio. none of it has a place here.

  Never forget that fandom has, does, and always will do everything ai does but 10x better.

  Art? Real artists will pour their sweat blood and tears into that piece of art or give their half a braincell to that silly sketch comic. There are hundreds of artists who take commissions and need the money. There are artists who do requests for free.

  Writing? Real writers will pour their heart and soul into their writing whether it be a dramatic novel length fic or a one shot or some headcanons. Writers take requests. Writers take commissions.

  Character interactions? There are role-play blogs and forums right there for you to join, with people who are actually invested in the character and want to have fun playing as them. There are ask blogs galore. Scared of them making the character ooc? AI does that too quite a lot, often in a far more egregious way.

  Character voices? People make fandubs all the time. People make comic dubs constantly. There are so many people with incredible talent who can capture the voice of a character perfectly no matter if the character has a canon voice or has never spoken. (The snapcube dubs are a prime example. AI would never have given us Eggman’s announcement that’s for sure)

  I promise you right now. Anything AI could possibly do, fandom can do better. Far better. Even if it seems low quality or even bad, it still came from a place of passion instead of being pumped put of soulless ai that likely stole from elsewhere.

  But still interested in feeding yourself? What if I told you that there’s a woman with a blog who had to feed both herself and her young son…on 10 British pounds ($15/14 Euro) per week?

  Let me tell you a thing.

  This woman saved my life last year. Actually saved my life. I had a piggy bank full of change and that’s it. Many people in my fandom might remember that dark time as when I had to hock my writing skills in exchange for donations. I cried a lot then. 

  This is real talk, people: I marked down exactly what I needed to buy, totaled it, counted out that exact change, and then went to three different stores to buy what I needed so I didn’t have to dump a load of change on just one person. I was already embarrassed, but to feel people staring? Utter shame suffused me. The reasons behind that are another post all together. 

  AgirlcalledJack.com is run by a British woman who was on benefits for years. Things got desperate. She had to find a way to feed herself and her son using just the basics that could be found at the supermarket. But the recipes she came up with are amazing. 

  You have to consider the differing costs of things between countries, but if you just have three ingredients in your cupboard, this woman will tell you what to do with it. Check what you already have. Chances are you have the basics of a filling meal already. 

  Here’s her list of kitchen basics. 

  Bake your own bread. It’s easier than you think. Here’s a list of many recipes, each using some variation of just plain flour, yeast, some oil, maybe water or lemon juice. And kneading bread is therapeutic. 

  Make your own pasta–gluten free. 

  She gets it. She really does. This is the article that started it all. It’s called “Hunger Hurts”.

  She has vegan recipes.

  A carrot, a can of kidney beans, and some cumin will get you a really filling soup…or throw in some flour for binding and you’ve got yourself a burger. 

  Don’t have an oven or the stove isn’t available? She covers that in her Microwave Cooking section. 

  She has a book, but many recipes can be found on her blog for free. She prices her recipes down to the cent, and every year she participates in a project called “Living Below the Line” where she has to live on 1 BP per day of food for five days. 

  Things improved for me a little, but her website is my go to. I learned how to bake bread (using my crockpot, but that was my own twist), and I have a little cart full of things that saved me back then, just in case I need them again. She gives you the tools to feed yourself, for very little money, and that’s a fabulous feeling. 

  Tip: Whenever you have a little extra money, buy a 10 dollar/pound/euro giftcard from your discount grocer. Stash it. That’s your super emergency money. Make sure they don’t charge by the month for lack of use, though.
  

  I don’t care if it sounds like an advertisement–you won’t be buying anything from the site. What I DO care about is your mental, emotional, and physical health–and dammit, food’s right in the center of that. 

  If you don’t need this now, pass it on to someone who does. Pass it on anyway, because do you REALLY know which of the people in your life is in need? Which follower might be staring at their own piggy bank? Trust me: someone out there needs to see this.
