Cities must be proactive in facing the climate crisis, says UN Climate Change Coordinator Niklas Hagelberg, the coordinator of the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Subprogramme on Climate Change, emphasizes the urgency for cities to take proactive measures in anticipation of the climate crisis. Highlighting the recent heavy rains that impacted over 80% of Rio Grande do Sul cities, Hagelberg underscores the profound impact of extreme weather events on communities. Vulnerable cities across the globe must anticipate and prepare for more frequent extreme events by upgrading infrastructure, implementing early warning systems, improving energy efficiency, and educating communities on disaster preparedness and response. In Brazil, potential disasters, including droughts in the Amazon and Northeast and floods in the South, highlight the need for comprehensive planning and adaptation strategies to protect populations and natural resources. 🌳🇧🇷 Telling Europe the untold story of Brazil’s green potential It is not about denying the environmental problems and challenges Brazil faces — that are well-known worldwide — but about telling stories on how different industries and companies, following the best ESG practices available, have managed to build sustainable and thriving businesses “because” they were set up in Brazil. That is the main idea behind the Brazil Climate Summit Europe, a spin-off of the conference held in New York since 2022, which will take place on May 27 in Paris. “The goal is to promote the country as a low-carbon solutions hub, to bring the country’s potential to light without hiding its problems. [This is necessary because] what we see today is that the difficulties are better known than the country’s strengths,” says Jorge Hargrave, director of Maraé Investimentos — the family office of Guilherme Leal, co-founder of cosmetics giant Natura — and one of the organizers of the event in New York and now in Paris. Many hands are involved in organizing Brazil Climate Summit Europe, also being referred to as BCS Europe. The group organizing it is made of alumni and current students of INSEAD, one of Europe's most prominent business schools. Today is International #Biodiversity Day and we at Refloresta are writing this post from #Brazil, a country with a huge opportunity to fund effective action on biodiversity loss via #highintegrity #naturebased solutions projects. The #Cerrado #savannah gets less public attention compared to the specular Amazon rainforests, and yet, it is said to be the World's most biodiverse savannah - both above and below ground. 🐀 200 mammals species 🐦 800 bird species 🐊 180 reptile species 🐟 1200 fish species 🍀 11,000 plant species, around half of them are only found in the Cerrado and are of critical importance to local communities. 🐚 There are 60 endangered species of which 12 are critically endangered 🐜 In addition, the Cerrado is known as an "upside-down" forest, with 70% of forest biomass being below ground and storing 35 tons of carbon per acre. Living organisms in the soil are crucial to keep this underground ecosystem alive - from bacteria, to fungi, to macroinvertebrates like earthworms, they are producers of organic matter, nutrient recyclers and soil engineers. Maintaining #soilbiodiversity is essential to keep the Cerrado Biome ecoystem functioning from the bottom up. The corporate and finance sector here in our country is increasingly committing to channel investments into preserving Brazil's biodiversity - our most precious asset and the foundation of our economy and society. We at Refloresta are creating #forest #conservation and #reforestation project in our country's biodiversity hotspots, with a focus on the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. Maximising on biodiversity #impact is our default position and a non-negotiable. A new study published in "Perspectives in Ecology and Conservation," backs previous data demonstrating that #Indigenous guardianship is key for mitigating the effects of climate change. The study, which focused on the Brazilian state of Mato Grasso, found that Indigenous lands and conservation units contribute more to climate regulation than multiple-use areas, underscoring the crucial role that protected areas play in regional water supply services and mitigating ongoing climate change. However, the ability of protected areas to keep forests intact has already begun to decline. Persistent degradation from forest fires, deforestation and global climate change are increasingly challenging the capacity of protected areas to regulate climate. Still, the study found that protected areas are not only essential for preserving forests and native vegetation, but are even more crucial for regulating the regional effects of climate change as temperatures continue to rise. https://bit.ly/45LMwOX

Governments can and should at least triple ambition in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions – the so-called “NDCs 3.0” due at COP30 in Brazil - if we are to limit the impact of climate change. Since the Paris Agreement was signed at COP21, countries are required to submit #NDCs every five years with the next submission due in 2025. However, current NDC targets set in 2020 are only expected to deliver ~6 GtCO2e of emissions savings per year by 2035, far from what is required for a 1.5°C-aligned pathway. If governments reflect existing commitments and the latest technological progress in “NDCs 3.0” #TriplingAmbition is possible, helping accelerate climate progress in the right direction.
