Today at the DIGICOM 2024 in Barcelos, researcher Isabella Barbosa Silva is presenting the paper “Digitalisation of Maintenance Work in Cleanrooms: User Research Insights for Interaction Design.” In the context of the Microelectronics project for a semiconductor factory, this research focused on designing a digital tool tailored for maintenance workers operating in extreme environments like cleanrooms. By adopting a human-centred design (HCD) approach, the team explored workflows, existing technologies, and conducted interviews to uncover valuable insights. The findings reveal core features for improved interaction design and highlight key challenges for designers in these unique settings. Exciting to see innovation at the intersection of design and technology! #DIGICOM2024 #InteractionDesign #HumanCentredDesign #HCD #SemiconductorIndustry #FraunhoferPortugalAICOS

Join us at HCDWeek@AICOS for an inspiring session with Graham Pullin! On November 25, at 5 PM (local time), the Designer and Professor of Design and Disability at the University of Dundee will address the topic “Exploring with Mentors”. In this unique session, Graham Pullin from Studio Ordinary will delve into the powerful intersection of design and disability studies. Rather than seeing disability as a 'problem' to 'solve,' Studio Ordinary embraces it as an integral part of life. Together with disabled and nondisabled researchers, they work on projects that challenge perceptions and elevate often-overlooked conversations around disability. Graham will share insights into the creative process of 'making' as a tool for learning and discussing disability, including projects like Hands of X and Imagining Technologies for Disability Futures. Discover the role of mentors and collaborators in their work and explore how co-researchers are shifting the dialogue on disability through design. This session promises to reshape your perspective on design, disability, and the importance of collaboration. Stay tuned! #HCDWeek2024 #DesignAndDisability #InclusiveDesign #StudioOrdinary

As part of project Fictions, FhP-AICOS recently conducted another engaging workshop with workers from the dst group. For this session, our team developed a speculative prototype of a work sweater, equipped with various innovative technologies. Participants were invited to explore and discuss the potential positive and negative impacts of these futuristic features on their daily work. Through these workshops, we continue gathering valuable insights and recommendations to ensure that emerging technologies prioritize workers' rights and contribute to their well-being. Project Fictions is part of the FUTURESILIENCE program, advancing our vision for a more worker-centred future. #FictionsProject #FuturResilience #Innovation #WorkerWellbeing #HCD #HumanCentredDesign

Recently, a team of researchers from FhP-AICOS led three workshops aimed at identifying and exploring which values and how they manifest in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, in the relationship with patients, and in the use of technology. These sessions were attended by ophthalmologists specializing in glaucoma, researchers from the Instituto de Filosofia - UP, and AICOS researchers (designers, engineers, data scientists) with experience in designing and developing health technologies. “We used a tool we developed, in the form of a card game, which aims to stimulate exploration and discussion among the different stakeholders,” explains Ricardo Melo, senior researcher at FhP-AICOS. “The workshops were very successful, with the tool we created proving to be very useful in fostering and channeling discussions about values in ophthalmological practice,” highlights the researcher. From the participants' perspective, the feedback was also very positive, with the approach being praised and considered “rich and innovative.” These workshops were conducted as part of the SIGNO project. By applying methods of co-creation and participatory exploration, SIGNO will generate a set of recommendations and a set of experimental prototypes, exploring the issue of values, the purpose of which is to support the design of more useful and effective technology in healthcare. As a contribution to society, such usefulness should translate into more appropriate health technology design, support clinical decision, better-informed patients, and, ultimately, better health for all. #DigitalHealth #values #HCD #TechnologyDesign #HealthcareSolutions
