Do you know what kind of applications marine bioprospecting can have? Explore how EUREMAP leverages marine bioprospecting for applications in nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, agrochemicals, and sustainable aquaculture! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dWER4fCx #EUREMAP #marinebioprospection #blueeconomy #EU_RIs
Natural products are produced by the metabolism of living organisms in response to external stimuli, for communication with the environment, competition and other roles in the ecosystem. Marine bioprospecting uses this for many applications, such as: • 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants and essential oils that can be used as natural additives in food. • 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: minerals, amino acids, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, terpenoids, polyphenols and pigments that have potential in cosmetic formulations. • 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: antifungals and antibacterials can be developed into biopesticides and herbicides to replace traditional chemical products on the market. • 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: alternative approaches and solutions to reduce the impact of fish diseases in fish farms, as an alternative to antibiotics. In a collaborative effort, EUREMAP will benefit from the latest technological advances, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of marine bioprospecting, and leverage Europe's product discovery pipeline! #euremap #marinebioprospection #blueeconomy #EU_RIs EMBL | EU-OPENSCREEN | EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre | ELIXIR | UiT- The Arctic University of Norway | Fundacion MEDINA | Universiteit Gent | Tel Aviv University | Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research | SINTEF | Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) | Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche | Sorbonne Université | European Research Executive Agency (REA) | Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn | Centre national de la recherche scientifique

Don't miss next Monday's phd defence where Francisca Félix will talk about "Improvement of Senegalese sole sperm quality through the action of melatonin and other natural antioxidants" PhD synopsis: Nowadays, Senegalese sole industry still depends on wild-caught males to maintain reproduction in captivity. The males born and raised in captivity (F1 males) do not spawn naturally and present low sperm volume and quality. This thesis aimed to improve the sperm quality of F1 breeders using natural antioxidants, with a particular focus on melatonin, a night-hormone that controls reproduction and has a strong antioxidant capacity. A different approach using algae-based antioxidants was also explored. With this work, new information regarding the reproductive impairment of F1 males was given. Moreover, this thesis unravelled melatonin mechanisms in Senegalese sole reproductive system, found that industry could benefit from collecting sperm at night, and that algae-based antioxidants have the potential to improve sperm quality. #ThesisDefence #WeAreCCMAR

Don't miss next Thursday's PhD defence where Eliza Fragkopoulou will talk about "Potential consequences of future climate change for marine ecosystem structuring species" PhD synopsis: Climate change is redistributing marine biodiversity globally. This thesis identifies the distribution drivers of keystone ecosystem structuring species, such as kelp and seagrass, and estimates current and future biodiversity patterns globally, from genes to ecosystems. Our results pinpoint regions more prone to biodiversity changes due to climate change, as well as areas where climate impacts are projected to be milder, serving as potential climatic refugia. Our findings provide insights into the potential future of marine biodiversity, supporting climate change mitigation and serving as guidelines for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems. #ThesisDefence #WeAreCCMAR

Known as kelp, the brown macroalgae 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢 (Gunnerus) Foslie, 1884, form vital marine forests that serve as nurseries and feeding grounds for various marine organisms. In Portugal, there are few forests left, from Esposende to the north, threatened by rising sea temperatures and herbivory. #Understanding #Protecting #Exploring #PortugueseBlueBiobank #BlueBioeconomyPact
