Can team-building evaluations promote respect and trust? I tell my team leaders to use feedback as their GPS. When you operate from a growth mindset you view failure as a good thing. It holds you accountable and tells you what not to do next time. And just like in Stephen Covey's book at the speed of trust before you get trust you have to give trust. When you create an environment or a culture where everyone feels comfortable and that they can say anything that's on their mind and not going to be made fun of or receive pushback that's when you will get true genuine feedback. You want to for sure share it with your team and discuss anything that needs to be discussed and watch the level of respect and trust rise above in your organization.

Lack of trust will cause lack of confidence, support and for sure, the results will be impacted. Project manager is trusted to manage the work as intended and as per the cost/schedule. Stakeholders will also be supportive to the needs throughout the lifecycle of projects whenever respect and trust are given.

Finding ways to set up a culture in a team for giving and receiving feedback is a must. This process will increase trust and respect in the team if organized in a right way. At least, this is what I've learned from my experience. People easily express positive opinion rather than a negative one. Many don't even know how to make remarks. There should be someone trusted who can help individuals to become a team. Project manager or Team leader are those to help. HR's task is more general. Some things I do when joining a team as a PM: - Having one-to-ones, listening to issues, solving them - Explaining the importance of receiving any feedback - Motivating with positive feedbacks received (not only) - Teaching to help and receive support

It is quite important to understand first and foremost what is important for us when assessing the team's effectiveness and to pay attention to it. Feedback in the form of surveys provides a great assessment from another perspective; however, it is necessary to craft surveys very carefully to obtain specific answers to the questions we need.

Focus on specific behaviors, not personalities. Use "I" statements to express your perspective. Offer actionable suggestions for improvement and acknowledge strengths alongside areas for development. Example: Instead of saying "You always miss deadlines," say "I noticed some project tasks were delayed. Let's explore ways to improve time management together." This approach avoids blame and encourages dialogue for future improvement.

When giving constructive feedback, focus on actions, not personal traits. Be clear about what you noticed and how it affected things, using examples if you can. Offer ways to improve and mention what was done well too. Make sure your feedback is clear, on time, and respectful to encourage growth and learning.✌🏻

When teaching teams to address criticism I like using the “sandwich-method”: The criticism is the “meat” and center of your argument, but that should always be embedded in a bottom and top “bread-crust”. Therefore, a conversation should start with a constructive praise or compliment, then add your critical thoughts in the middle and top off with a cheerful thought or thanks for other achievements. This approach not only helps to actually address critical issues which many of us don’t like doing, but it also definitely helps to remain each other’s esteem. It sounds simple, it is simple but key is the preparation of some empathetic thoughts.

Receiving feedback well means listening without getting upset. Take in what they say, even if it's hard to hear. Ask questions to understand better and thank them for their input. Think about what you can learn from it and how you can improve ✌🏻

Together, respect and trust form the foundation of healthy relationships and societies. They create environments where people feel empowered to express themselves authentically, take risks, and innovate. Conversely, when respect and trust are lacking, relationships become strained, communication breaks down, and cooperation becomes difficult. In such environments, conflict and distrust can escalate, leading to division, resentment, and even hostility. In essence, respect and trust are essential because they enable us to build meaningful connections, navigate differences, and work together towards common objectives. They are the bedrock of harmony, cooperation, and progress in both interpersonal and societal dynamics.

An important aspect to consider when designing team building evaluations is the inclusivity of the process. Ensuring that team members from diverse backgrounds and with varying communication styles feel heard and valued during evaluations is crucial. This can be achieved by providing multiple channels for feedback, such as anonymous surveys, one-on-one meetings, and group discussions, to accommodate different preferences and comfort levels.
