Going for Gold is three imagined conversations based on the career of Frankie Lucas a black British Middleweight Boxer from London in the 1970's. The film charts his early ambitions, the fights and the obstacles of the boxing cartels and the harsh realities of racist Britain from the 1970's - 2002. Interspersed with live footage of Frankie's fights and cut with the corresponding riots of the time - the film moves from 1974 to 1981 and finally to 2002 before closing in 2012. The first conversation is with a young boy and explores notions of identity and belonging. The second is with Frankie's trainer examining the challenges of the time for black British boxers and The last conversation is with a reporter who tries to understand Frankie's retreat from society in order to save his soul.
