Pirates is divided into mini-games with different skills and an overall map screen where the player navigates around the Caribbean, looking for areas of interest. Sailing, evasion, naval and land combat, turn-based strategy, fencing, and strategic planning are skills needed to succeed. Play is open-ended; the player can attack enemy ships or cities, hunt pirates, seek treasure, rescue family members or increase wealth by trading. The game finishes when the player retires, and they are assigned a position from beggar to King's advisor, based on wealth, land, rank, marital status, and other accomplishments achieved in the game.
