Eddie is with friends when he gets an order from his boss to get some kegs from a nearby port; it shouldn't take him an hour. Eddie is provoked, but he takes his boat and starts out for the kegs, after explaining things to Mary. At the port Eddie meets some friends, who insist upon his celebrating. He leaves drunk. He dozes in the boat while it drifts along. He dreams of the waiting Mary and the guests and sees them depart. Mary goes sorrowfully to the shore to look for him. He sees the father looking for his girl and the mother grief-stricken. He sees Mary gradually being overtaken by the tide and finally sees her submerged in the water. Then the boat upsets and Eddie awakens and hurries home. He gets there just in time and is scolded for his wet clothes, but the dream has given him a lesson which will remain with him.
