Lesbian Visibility Day is important in the LGBTQ community. Despite representing the first letter of the acronym, Lesbians can often be ignored or forgotten. But they are there, and we are not going to let them go unnoticed. So to all the Lesbian Pride Knights; we can see you, you are valid, and we are so proud of you! Keep doing amazing things!
This is what we are fighting against. The people affected are the people we are fighting for. Uganda has an horendous human rights record against the LGBTQ community, and now they are using COVID-19 as a way to target LGBTQ people.
The government raided an LGBT shelter where many people are vulnerable and trying to avoid persecution in a country determined to pass laws removing what little human rights the LGBTQ community have. 19 people got detained, including the director of the charity that runs the shelter. These are 19 people who are going to be treated as inhuman in prison. These are 19 people who are still in prison after this raid on March 29 who aren’t allowed to see their lawyer. These are 19 people who are feeling scared and alone right now.
The fight for LGBTQ rights will never end until everyone in the community feels safe. While this will take a long time, we will never give up, we will never forget about anyone, and we will continue to push forward.
