We are back with another community meetup, this time featuring the incredible Mahrukh ماہ رخ माह रुख़ Hasan حسن हसन, who I am lucky to have connected with, and learn from. Together, we'll unpack an important concept, that despite being a buzzword as of late, is often challenging for many of us to put into practice. It is also a crucial theme that sits at the heart of Thousand&One's ethos and community. Join us on September 12th for an interactive session on 'Decolonolization in Practice'. We'll use this time to reflect on our histories and relationships to colonialism and collectively envision pathways to more liberatory futures. Women of colour and allies welcome. Grab your ticket here: https://shorturl.at/VdaEE

Decolonization IS NOT what you think it is. 🚫 It's NOT diversity, equity, and inclusion. 🚫 It's NOT localization. 🚫 It's NOT a metaphor. ✊🏿 Decolonization is LAND BACK. ✊🏾 Decolonization is REPARATIONS. ✊🏽 Decolonization is LIBERATION... But what does that mean in 2024? And, is it relevant to the workplace? Join me on Sept 12 for an exploratory discussion on Decolonization in Practice. We'll unpack the legacy of colonialism, coloniality, and modernity, and how each of us can support liberatory futures for Indigenous peoples in our lives and at work. 🎟️ Register now: https://lnkd.in/e6j4kn8u Pay what you can option to contribute to Thousand&One's programming. It was an honour to be the first guest speaker for Cohort 4 of the Shifting Power Accelerator, run by the passionate and dedicated Mahrukh ماہ رخ माह रुख़ Hasan حسن हसन I highly recommend anyone who is looking to learn more about the more critical issues in #globaldevelopment to consider taking it. I accept very few speaking engagements and this was one I could not say no to. Thank you Maha, for giving me the space to as you say, "critique the critique". There are no quick fixes to what is an endemic problem in #aid and none of us has the right answers. At least not just yet. You dont have to agree with me, as I do not agree with many myself. But we have to allow ourselves the space to disagree before we actually get to the same page. It is trial and error that will hopefully get us there and we need to try and error a great deal to actually get there. Wherever "there" might be.

🤔 Decolonization, localization, or...𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? Themrise Khan recently joined the Shifting Power Accelerator as our first guest speaker ► to critique the emergent discourse of decolonizing and localizing aid, which is wrongly being led by the political and financial centers in the Global North ► to advocate for democratizing development, which centers countries, national governments, and long-standing civil society as arbiters of their own futures "We need to completely move away from the current models of what we call aid and development, towards independent nations meeting their own development needs and generating their own systems of financial and technical support." During her live Q&A session, she shared her thesis on an alternative ecosystem for global development and humanitarianism where: ✅ Countries are centered and the drivers of their own development 🚫 Financial and political centers in the Global North are not the drivers ✅ There is an end to the aid system - at least as we know it 🚫 Reimagining aid is not enough Do you agree with Themrise? Should we be talking about decolonizing aid, localizing aid, democratization, or something else? Let me know in the comments! 👇 ___ Interested in joining a future cohort of the 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫? ✍️ Learn more and sign up for the waitlist: https://lnkd.in/eMHg_kpi #ShiftThePower #DecolonizeAid #Localization #Democratization #GlobalDev #HumanitarianAssistance

The first two quarters of this year have been so busy and exciting for us at Thousand&One. But as an organization that cares deeply about boundaries and work-life balance, we want to ensure that we take the advice we give. We’ll be taking a step back for a few weeks this summer to regroup and rest. You’ll find us in our family home in Toronto eating home-cooked Persian meals and soaking up the sun. But before we sign off, there are a few things we want to share with you. SAVE THE DATE  ☀️ On June 11th, we hosted our first Quarterly Meetup where we discussed community and inclusion with our incredible guest speaker Sapna Agarwal. Thanks so much to all who joined. ☀️ Our next Quarterly Meetup will be held on Thursday, September 12th at 12:00 PM EST / 5 PM BST. We'll be joined by the Founder of Fearless Project, Mahrukh ماہ رخ माह रुख़ Hasan حسن हसन to explore the theme of 'Decolonization in Practice'. This is going to be good one! ☀️ Make sure you're signed up to our newsletter to get all the juicy details: https://lnkd.in/erbdbD_v SUPPORT OUR GOFUNDME 🌻 Thousand&One has been self-funded since its inception in 2021.
