🏅🌍 Are the Olympic Games sustainable this year? As the Olympic Games continue, with only a few days left until the closing ceremony, it's essential to look at them through the lens of sustainable development. According to the United Nations, sustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." How do this year's Games align with these goals? Let's explore: 🏠 Olympic Village The Olympic Village was designed as an eco-neighborhood. Post-Games, it will transform into a residential and business district accommodating 12,000 people. Notably, 25% of the housing will be designated for social housing, with the remaining units offered at affordable prices for students and low-income workers. Innovative furnishings include coffee tables made from recycled badminton shuttlecocks, parachute cloth poufs, and chairs crafted from recycled bottle caps. 🥗 Food and Nutrition The availability of plant-based ingredients has been increased by 100% for spectators and staff. Additionally, 80% of the ingredients are sourced from local agriculture to reduce transportation. The Place de la Concorde (where badminton and rhythmic gymnastics competitions are held) venue exclusively serves vegetarian dishes. 🏟️ Construction of New Sports Facilities This year's Games required the construction of only one new sports facility - the Adidas Arena at the Place de la Concorde. Impressively, 95% of the venues utilize existing infrastructure. 🔥 Torches and Medals Each Olympic and Paralympic medal is adorned with a piece of original iron from the Eiffel Tower. The redesigned torch features a sleek silver cylinder made from recycled steel, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the 2,000 torches produced for the Games. 👫 Gender Equality The Games have achieved a perfect gender balance, with 50% male and 50% female athletes. These initiatives highlight that the Olympic Games are not just about sport competition but also represent a significant event with substantial environmental and social impacts.
