crazy f1 race rabbit hole part 2: canadian gp 2011 breakdown; or the one where jenson button was god"s favorite for 4 hours straight (this is an all timer its literally in every top 10 list out there)

• for starters, a bit of season background: this is the 7th race of 2011, and sebastian vettel won 5 out of the previous 6! he makes no mistakes, red bull makes no mistakes (sound familiar?)
• like every race set to be a nutcase, it starts under safety car due to heavy rain. rolling start is only in lap 5 still with absurd spray and no visibility whatsoever, seb on pole pulls away with the ferraris trailing behind. then only three racing laps in, jenson gives lewis an incestuous kissy!

• lewis out, safety car in. jenson who was p4 gets a drive-through penalty and comes out of the pits in p15. not much happens after SC ends bc the rain gets insane, and they red flag it on lap 25. now this is why this is the longest f1 grand prix to date: it was a TWO HOUR red flag. here"s lewis and rihanna during the red flag (?)

• another start under SC, back to racing in lap 34 and jenson somehow gets away with a collision 3 racing laps in again. this time it"s with nando (after ferrari butchers a double pit stop which sees him drop from p6 to p10)

• nando out, millionth SC of the day. jenson has a puncture and a damaged front wing, goes into the pits and comes out DEAD LAST in p21. rolling start in lap 41, seb pulls away in the lead immediately and starts setting fastest lap after fastest lap. kobayashi and massa are necking each other for p2 and schumi pulls a double overtake on them 🤪
• 15 laps to go is where i started to grip the edge of my seat. jenson makes 11 spots in 9 laps. yeah you read that right, he gets his ass out of p21 in lap 41 to p10 by lap 50. mclaren then makes the best decision they could"ve: they call him in for his SIXTH (6th) pit stop for fresh inters. every car in front has to pit after him and he benefits greatly from it, up to p4 by lap 56.
• nick heidfeld crashes out his renault in lap 57 and guess what. SAFETY CAR. it benefits jenson immensely, getting him pushed up against schumi and mark battling for p2. also during this SC one of the marshalls FALLS ON TRACK (i thought i was about to witness murder on international broadcast)

• another rolling start on lap 61. now to one of the hottest racing three-ways ive ever seen - schumi, mark and jenson spend like 4 full laps under 0.5s of each other. jenson makes a bold move on mark by taking the wet spot to get ahead and flies by michael with ease. lap 66 he"s p2, seb 4 seconds ahead.
• FINAL LAP (70). seb -who dominated the race through every crazy stint- and jenson -2 collisions, drive-through penalty, 6 fucking pit stops and was at one point dead last- are GLUED. and then bc god picked jenson several times that day... SEB LOCKS UP THE REAR. HE MAKES A MISTAKE. jenson takes the weirdest most impossible win ever on the last lap of a 4 hour and 4 minutes f1 event that saw six safety cars, about a bazillion damaged front wings, 6 dnfs and a marshall who probably saw the steps to the pearly gates. so intense that jenson was tearing up in the press conference
