Just as some feedback, I was highly surprised by this change of long-standing behavior upon upgrading from 1.40. For our purposes, we have a section towards the bottom of the homepage of our mediawiki install that transclude{s,d} the first page of Special:WantedPages under text along the lines of "if you're looking for something to contribute, here are some suggestions to get you started."

The following VisualEditor patch appears to be sufficient to stop the visual editor from breaking, without any other cascading failure that I can see from a quick test:
