This problem has just been raised again in a discussion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Srich32977_and_FAITACCOMPLI where the subst'ed template "Format ISBN" is seen as a solution to a problem ... but does not, currently, work within <ref> tags. So I add my voice here to urge that this problem should be fixed ASAP for the benefit of readers and editors.

OK, I've gone to Patch demo to look, registered myself as a user (after missing the small print of the "Captcha" instructions and having to start again, frustratingly), and yes, it looks as if the problem is solved there: in my Firefox browser, the tab appears with "Starting..." or "Editing ..." as the leading characters.

Please reopen this request. The recent closure of T102078 showed that it did not address the question I raised in this request. My request is for a search which can be added as a "See also" in a disambiguation page, which will search for a word to be present in an article title, or a redirect title.

I do not see how this resolves my request, which was merged into this. What do I add to the "See also" of a disambiguation page, to provide a search for a word in article titles and redirect titles but not article content, as an expanded version of the "in title" template? I know nothing about "Extensions" or "Advanced Search", and searching for these on en.wiki sheds no light.

Is there any progress on this? I note (now, having not seen it before) the proposal for an alternative at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019/Status_report_1#Named_References_in_VE which really doesn't look very helpful: if several of the refs in an article are to sources found on google books, or to a collection of articles written over time in one newspaper, or to journals from a particular online publisher, the editor will still have to struggle among a large set of semi-meaningless references (which of the umpteen ncbi refs in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford–AstraZeneca_COVID-19_vaccine would be ncbi-12?) It surely cannot be that difficult for an algorithm, faced with a reference in a citation template, to do something like: "Is there a "last" or "last1" field? If so, use it as ref name, adding number if needed for disambiguation (or, better, adding year if present, then number if needed); if no "last1", then use first word (or 2 words, or 10 chars) of "title" field, similarly. If all else fails, use the domain name as proposed."

I've got just two pages whose incoming links I don't want to see: an article I created on a publisher, which gets linked in many references to their publications, and a redirect I made from [[Districts of Russia]] to [[List of districts in Russia]], which was then overwritten by an article which has been included in infoboxes and linked from 23,000 articles: I think I have been notified every time. Conceivably an editor could create a group of related articles which all turn out to be as toxic - eg systematically writing about the publishers of a country or topic - so would have a larger number of pages to suppress, but I don't imagine many editors would get beyond, let's say, 50.

I'm now totally unfamiliar with VE because I abandoned it years ago because I found it unusable. I simply wanted to be able to move the category input box away from being on top of the info I needed to categorise, which might have been a county name for a locality, or a footballer's birth decade and field position, etc. It seems, to a naive editor, a simple request.

A simple interface in Preferences:Notifications, like the "mute user" input box, would be fine: just a box labelled "suppress link notifications for these page(s)" and the ability to list one or more page. Or, as Quiddity suggests, any other workable interface to get the same result.

I see that there will be no opportunity to raise this on the Community Wish List this year. So please, after four years, just fix it. I am so fed up with acknowledging links to that "Districts of Russia" redirect I created: it has 19,827 incoming links and I have been notified about every single one. And switching off the "notify me of new incoming links" option is not a satisfactory solution: I want to hear about new incoming links to most of my article creations, but I need to be able to suppress such notifications for a few selected pages. What more can I do to encourage some action on this?

The discussion above seems to ignore the needs of human editors. When I try to work in the text editor on an article which has multiple multi-used references, created in VE, I need to be able to see which reference is which. Initially I can see that "footnote n refers to reference colon - n - minus - one; by the time I've rearranged the text of the article I now have footnote "4" as ref ":3", and so on. So, please clarify: does this mean that 4 years on from my first request we're now being told nothing will happen unless we put it through the Community Wishlist scheme?

I'm not surprised to find that this has already been raised, but am surprised and disappointed that it's been allowed to remain unresolved for so long.

Three and a half years on from my initial complaint, and as far as I know the Visual Editor is still useless to me, so I don't use it. Let me know when it becomes a useful editing system for people who need to see the original article while adding categories or doing other tasks.

Yes - when someone tells me that VE is usable, I'll have another look at it. If the dialog box still obscures the content, then for my prolific WikiGnoming it's useless. Two years since I raised this, and no progress. Nice to feel appreciated.

And my app settings tells me I'm in Beta-2016-02-10.

An effect of this bug is that the tab bar jumps around distractingly if the window is below a certain width.

I'm still having the problem of inability to edit final section of many articles because the edit icons are loading the wrong sections, but have today found a new problem which is probably related.

All the problems I have encountered and reported have been in article namespace - please read my earlier detailed posts. It was someone else who found a problem with Category:Stubs.

Does the explanation for the problem account for the page where two sections had no edit icons and later icons referred to last-but-one section? See my post of 1 Jan 09:14.

The new title of this bug seems confusing: the problem is that the first (non-top) section has no edit icon, and the edit icons for later sections each point to the immediately previous section. In one example the first and second sections had no icons, and the remaining icons pointed to the last-but-one section.

I have now found a first example where two sections, not just one, have no edit icon: "Vijayadasami (film)" Current version is at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vijayadasami_(film)&oldid=697689522 I found the problem both last night (about 8 hours ago) and right now. There are no edit icons on mobile for the sections "Cast" and "Release", and the edit icons for "References" and "External links" each lead back two sections (ie from EL to "Release").

Thanks, that's good news. Time and again I've been gnoming away stub-sorting etc on my mobile, thought the dates were missing from lead though present in text or infobox, gone to edit the lead to add them ... and found them sitting there OK, just hidden by the app.

Another example of an article where removing bracketed text makes a nonsense: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Men_in_a_Boat . Please reconsider this "feature".

As an editor and reader, this suppression of bracketed information (typically a person's birth and death dates) feels like a bug. I spent time trying to find a person's birth date to upgrade the article from which it seemed to be missing, went to edit it, found it was there all along.

Well, as reader and editor I would prefer to see those dates included.

Is there any progress on this request? Recently for a few weeks the "Thanks" button appeared on the left, not the right - wonderful reduction in stress level. But it's back there now, under my finger when I'm poised to scroll a screen, vulnerable to a moment's doziness.

Looks as if it might work: I don't know the term "dock" but I think you mean what I'd call "minimise"? So click on that icon, the dialog box shrinks to an icon, I read what's behind it: I hope I can copy text from it, eg to fix a DEFAULTSORT? Then click on the icon to restore the dialogue box and carry on. Yes, could be a great solution. Probably better than my original suggestion, many moons ago, of dragging or resizing. Thanks.
