User story

When I reply to a survey I want to know that my response was successfully submitted and to who my response was submitted so I can understand how my contribution supports the wider initiative.

Background info

This is the current thank you message that every QuickSurvey user will get after they submit a survey response:

Thanks for the feedback! We are using it to make Wikipedia even better!

Design proposal

We might want to opt for a more generic message so that it will fit to a wide spectrum of surveys: from page performance to user safety. From Wikipedia to other Wikimedia projects. For example (note only the subject has changed):

Thanks for the feedback! We are using it to make Wikimedia projects even better!

Technical information

This involves updating the message in en.json. This should trigger re-translation in translate wiki.

Testing and QA steps

TBD beta cluster testing

Local testing:

Navigate to a page where a survey is enabled
Answer the survey
The new message should be displayed

Acceptance Criteria

When a user interact with a survey (internal or external) the new thank you message is displayed after a user submit a response or visits the external survey

Noted and agreed on this.

We could change it to something like "Thank you for your response. We are using it to make Wikimedia projects even better!" to make it more encompassing.

I wonder if it would make sense to have an "active quicksurveys" meta/mediawiki page that tracks all deployments and can link to the projects' meta pages when applicable?

Thank you @TAndic! The more generic message should cover from surveys on web performance to surveys on gender or user safety. You proposal seems like a good fit, so instead of " Thanks for the feedback! We are using it to make Wikipedia even better!" it would be " Thanks for the feedback! We are using it to make Wikimedia even better!" @Madalina what do you think?

Did a small update in task description on the wording to say "Wikimedia projects" as Wikimedia alone often implies the Foundation, or can confuse newer users who only know of Wikipedia.

Change was reverted, and we have an open question about what to do here.

From my perspective: Since QuickSurveys does not currently function well on non-Wikipedia sites (unless something has changed), the message could stay as-is and we could return to this update if or when we manage to make QuickSurveys work on Wikidata, Commons, etc. in the future.

@jsn.sherman: Hi, what exactly is this task stalled on?

@Aklapper We had some feedback from a volunteer that the change would adversely impact non-wikimedia installs, so we looped in a maintainer on the change request and asked for input, which we have not received.

@jsn.sherman I am not sure I fully follow the feedback. The initial message was

which was already unfit for non-wikimedia installs. It was even more specific than that, making it unfit for non-wikipedia installs. The rational behind this change, since the message is hard-coded, was to make it generic enough for all wikimedia projects and not just wikipedia-specific projects. As far as I understood adopters could still edit this hard-coded message in their specific deploy, is this right?

@aminalhazwani the initial messages was actually:
Thanks for the feedback! We are using it to make {{SITENAME}} even better!
Which expands out to the locally configured site name.

Thanks for the clarification @jsn.sherman, I now fully see where the feedback from the volunteer is coming from. We initially proposed this change because we wanted to make the message generic enough for non-wikipedia projects (eg. Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, ...). If the thank you message is site-specific thanks to the use of the magic word I think we could close this task. @Madalina do you agree?
