Consult with volunteers at en.wiki about offering the Reply Tool as a Beta Feature
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task is about the conversation that will happen before the Reply Tool is offered as a Beta Feature at en.wiki

Requirements

  • We have contacted volunteers who have already been using the Reply Tool at en.wiki and verified they are NOT aware of any issues they think should block the tool from being made available as a beta feature
  • Volunteers at en.wiki who are likely to have a stake in the Reply Tool are aware of the following:
    • What functionality the Reply Tool offers them
    • What the Reply Tool looks like
    • How they can try the Reply Tool before it is offered as a Beta Feature
    • How they can see how volunteers at en.wiki have been using the Reply Tool
    • The Reply Tool will not be available before agreed upon blockers are resolved
    • How their experiences will and could be affected when the Reply Tool is made available as a Beta Feature [i]
  • All commitments [ii] made in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(WMF)/Archive_2#RFC_on_Discussion_Tools_content_corruption are met.

Conversations

Done

  • The ===Requirements above are met
  • Where relevant, links to the page(s) where these conversations took place are listed in the ===Conversations section above

i. This assumes no blocking issues surface, which may not in fact be the case.

Has #CommRel-Specialists-Support been considered for this (not sure if in scope or capacity for them, though)?

Oh, good thought, @Aklapper. @Whatamidoing-WMF will be taking lead on this task so I didn't think the above was necessary.

With this said, I seldom think to tag CommRel-Specialists-Supporton tickets like this one. This leads me to wonder: should I be tagging #CommRel-Specialists-Support on tickets Sherry and I are working on? cc @Elitre

If you follow the links per https://office.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Relations_Specialists#How_to_contact_us_and_get_support , that will auto-tag the task for you, make sure we have all the relevant info we need, and allow me to assign as necessary (of course it's usually going to be Sherry, but depending on the task and other team's goings-on it may have to be someone else. While parent task(s) can usually be on you or other team members, the idea is that the support one is mostly on us :)

The English Wikipedia is ready for this Beta Feature, as a default-OFF, opt-in-only option. We have talked about both the Reply tool (no serious bugs, but we would like a toolbar in the source mode someday) and the New Discussion tool (no bugs reported).
