Add monolingual language code "tok" (Toki Pona) to Wikidata
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Please add the language code "tok" to the list of language codes supported for monolingual text values. It is intended to be used in relation to the constructed language Toki Pona (Q36846). The Toki Pona community is preparing to request "tok" as an official ISO 639-3 code, and is preparing a document demonstrating where it is used.

  • Usage example: Denote the language for lexemes in Toki Pona, and for their usage examples, as discussed in the WikiProject Toki Pona.

@jhsoby What is the opinion of the LangCom on this one?

As long as it's not an official ISO 639-3 code, this will be declined. Feel free to re-open if the application to the SIL is successful.

The application to SIL has been succesful. This week Toki Pona received a valid ISO code: tok. This can be verified here and here.

  • Language name in English: Toki Pona
  • Language name in the language itself: toki pona (fully lowercase)
  • Used script: Latin
  • Wikidata item: Q36846

I already made a pull request for the GitHub repository Language data and utilities.

Please rename the following pages on translatewiki.net. The suffix /tokipona should be changed to /tok.

Please add Toki Pona for monolingual text on Wikidata. According to the guidelines, Toki Pona qualifies to be supported.
Here are a few examples of Wikidata pages where I want to use the language code: Q12349932, Q108617357, Q108617358, Q108617400, Q108679008 and Q108885142.

All Toki Pona lexemes currently use the code mis-x-Q36846, this should be changed to tok. Please add support for tok for Wikidata lexemes.

It used to be possible to add labels, descriptions and aliases in Toki Pona on Wikidata. This got removed (T200432) because Toki Pona used an incorrect language code. Please reenable this. I saved things that got removed on my own page.

That is good news!

As Toki Pona is well-attested and seems to have quite some traction, I (as a LangCom member) support adding it for both lexemes and monolingual.

The issues you mention for Translatewiki should go in a separate task.

What is the next step in getting support for Toki Pona added? The previously mentioned pull request already got merged.

A patch has to be made for Wikibase Lexeme, Wikibase Repository and MediaWiki Config in order to get the codes working.
I'll do that when I have time.

Change 761013 had a related patch set uploaded (by Robin van der Vliet; author: Robin van der Vliet):

[mediawiki/core@master] Add Toki Pona (tok) to Names.php

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/761013

I made a patch to MediaWiki Core that should fix both this task and T300378. What is the next step? I was unsure who to add as a reviewer to my patch, so I did not add anyone.

I suspect it actually should be added to https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/translatewiki/ /master/LanguageSettings.php instead.

Mixup with other issue? This is wikidata, the other issue is translatewiki.

This problem is now solved! Now Wikidata uses the code "tok", I changed it over everywhere on the wiki.
