Danny is working on plans for a large-scale global consultation about talk pages, with the goal of coming to consensus as a movement about building or changing an on-wiki discussion system that will work for all of the Wikimedia projects. The consultation will start with coming to consensus on the problems that we need to solve, the good things about existing talk pages that we need to keep, and a common definition of what "better" means. It should end with a set of feature requirements that a product team can build next year.
This is going to be a big, high-touch project of uncertain duration, and it's going to need a considerable amount of support from Community Relations, both in the planning and execution.
Timeline:
Phase 0, Jan-mid - Feb 2019: Planning
Phase 1, mid-Feb - end of March: Collect information
Phase 2, April: Trade-offs and prioritization
Phase 3, scheduled for May: Review potential direction
First steps on this ticket will be conversations between Danny and CRs, to figure out the pre-planning and source the cross-functional working group.
