Not everyone is impacted by extreme heat in the same way. Older adults, children, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant individuals, and outdoor workers are especially vulnerable to extreme heat impacts. People who have experienced historic and systematic racism also face greater vulnerability. Crowded apartment buildings in neighborhoods with less green areas and more air pollution all make people in them less able to adapt to heat. Turn the sound on to hear Sonal J. from WE ACT for Environmental Justice explain the connection between environmental justice and extreme heat. Does your home town invest in nature-based solutions like urban tree canopies or composting programs? Detailed highlight notes are now available for EESI's recent briefing, "Cities Leading the Way on Nature-Based Solutions," which explored equitable and community-designed climate solutions from small- and medium-sized cities. Too long; didn't read? You can also save 🔖 and share ↪ these key takeaways: 1. Policies that leverage nature-based solutions (such as green roofs and urban trees) play a key role in combating climate change and fostering resilient urban communities. 2. Nature-based solutions can help address climate change by reducing flood risks, improving water quality, protecting coastal property, restoring and protecting wetlands, stabilizing shorelines, and reducing urban heat. 3. American Forests has developed a tool called the Tree Equity Score that sets a national standard to assess how well the benefits of urban tree canopies reach the people most in need. 4. Many municipalities have limited sustained funding and staff for nature-based solutions. Federal support is critical, especially funding that goes directly from the federal level to a municipality. The EESI family offers our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Judith Lynn Campbell Bird, who passed away last month at her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. We are incredibly grateful that Judy spent a number of years with EESI as part of her exceptional career dedicated to water quality. Former EESI Executive Director Carol Werner shared the following memories of working with her: "Judy had worked with Congressional members to hold a field hearing in Iowa on water quality and its inclusion in the Farm Bill—another pioneering effort. Then when Judy was working as a water quality consultant to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), we did several Congressional briefings with USGS scientists and state officials on various water pollution issues, including things like coal tar parking lot sealants and their many nasty impacts." #DidYouKnow Eunice Newton Foote became the first person to demonstrate that carbon dioxide heats the Earth's atmosphere in 1856? If you didn't know that, it might be because a male contemporary named John Tyndall was credited with the discovery three years later. It is unclear if Tyndall was aware of Foote's experiments. Foote was also a fierce advocate for women's rights. She was a signatory at the first women's rights convention in 1848 alongside her friend and suffragist leader, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Eunice Newton Foote would have turned 205 this week! In honor of her contributions to climate science, let's take a moment to reflect on the obstacles that continue to face women and girls in STEM. Check out these EESI resources highlighting the contributions of women working in the climate space today: https://lnkd.in/eA8Xcf6E #WomenInSTEM #GenderEquality #GreenhouseGasEffect #CarbonDioxide
