These structures have benefited elk, grizzly bears, and countless other creatures for almost 30 years now, reducing collision mortality rates and opening up corridors for migration. Wildlife corridors, or land areas that connect fragmented habitats, can make movement and resources more accessible for animals. Congress is considering the bipartisan Wildlife Movement Through Partnerships Act (H.R.8836), which would support efforts that improve habitat connectivity. #LastWeekInCongress: ✔ The House Committee on Natural Resources advanced the Accelerating Appraisals and Conservation Efforts Act (H.R.5443) to the House floor for consideration. The bipartisan bill would reduce the red tape hindering land sales and exchanges between private lands and federal public lands. ✔ The same committee also advanced the bipartisan Water Monitoring and Tracking Essential Resources (WATER) Data Improvement Act (H.R.5770) to support water monitoring programs under the U.S. Geological Survey. ✔ The Water Resources Development Act of 2024 (H.R.8812), a legislative package that reauthorizes flood control, ecosystem restoration, and other water resource projects under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was introduced in the House. ✔ Introduced in both chambers, the Wildlife Movement Through Partnerships Act (H.R.8836) would codify the Wildlife Movement and Migration Corridor Grant Program, establish the State and Tribal Migration Research Program, and support other conservation initiatives. Some of you may remember learning about the City of Trees Challenge during our June 11 briefing on natural climate solutions. This initiative has successfully planted 235,000 forest seedlings! 👏👏👏

The Supreme Court rejected 40 years of precedent last Friday by overturning the Chevron doctrine, which gave reasonable deference to expert agencies when interpreting statutes. Now, that authority belongs to judges. EESI President Daniel Bresette swiftly released a media statement decrying this decision. "As the rejection of the Chevron doctrine reverberates throughout government and across the legal landscape, it is hard to imagine how it could result in anything positive for climate action." The bill also includes the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy (ADVANCE) Act. ✔ The bipartisan Fix Our Forest Act (H.R.8790), which aims to expedite regulatory review processes for forest management projects that curtail wildfire risk, was introduced in the House. ✔ Also introduced in the House, the bipartisan America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Reauthorization Act (H.R.8811) would reauthorize wildlife conservation efforts across the country and increase protections from new and emerging threats. ✔ And introduced in the Senate, the bipartisan Colorado River Basin System Conservation Extension Act (S.4576) would extend the life of the System Conservation Pilot Program -- which tests water conservation strategies to alleviate the impacts of severe drought -- to 2026.
