🧑🌾Nearly one million farmers in Ghana are grappling with a severe dry spell, threatening their livelihoods and food security. The government has initiated a ₵8 billion relief package, but long-term solutions are essential. Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT predicted this reality, warning that rising temperatures could drastically reduce cocoa production by 2030. Experts stress the need for modern irrigation, adaptation plans, and climate-smart agriculture to combat these climate impacts. Building resilience is key to securing Ghana’s agricultural future. 🌱In Eastern Uganda's Butaleja district, smallholder farmers have struggled to access high-quality seeds, limiting their productivity and resilience. A groundbreaking initiative by CGIAR's Seed Equal program is changing that through inclusive social and behavioral change communication (SBCC) campaigns. These efforts, which include radio dramas and agricultural talk shows, reach over 850,000 farmers, reshaping farming practices and increasing access to improved seed varieties for better yields and stronger livelihoods. 🧑🌾A CGIAR-backed experiment in northeastern Nigeria reveals that price significantly influences not only if farmers buy agricultural inputs but also when. Offering discount vouchers led to a 92% take-up with a 50% discount and 99% with a 75% discount. The higher discount spurred quicker purchases, suggesting price-sensitive farmers might delay purchases to monitor market trends. Future research will assess if these timing differences impact agricultural productivity and household welfare. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dRWaW9HK #FoodSecurity #Agriculture #Research

👩🌾Women play a vital role in global food security, yet often face limited access to key resources. In Ghana's Upper East Region, women farmers like Nma Atorega are transforming their livelihoods through bundle innovations in agriculture. By using mechanized maize seeding combined with basal NPK fertilizer and maize leaf stripping, Nma saw a 40% yield increase—boosting her income and providing livestock feed. This initiative, led by CGIAR and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), is helping close gender gaps in agriculture while promoting sustainable practices. 🍚In Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines, zinc deficiency remains a significant health concern due to the widespread consumption of rice, which naturally has low zinc content. Efforts by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), HarvestPlus, and International Rice Research Institute have led to the development of biofortified zinc-enriched rice, containing nearly double the zinc levels of traditional varieties. This innovation is improving zinc intake and promoting better health outcomes in Bangladesh and Indonesia. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eyDvxuVA #Innovation #Nutrition
