A downloadable game

Bein' a samurai aint easy when you break every blade you use!

Blade Breaker: Sword Taker is the story of Giri, a young Oni who wishes to become a samurai!
Too bad she's too strong for her own good, every sword she uses just shatters like glass!
Break swords! Take swords! Break more swords!

In BB:ST, your sword will break every time you manage to hit an enemy. Steal swords from the enemy and make them your own!
Fight your way to victory, and claim the ultimate unbreakable blade!

This game was made for the GMTKJam, which has the theme of "Only Once".
BB:ST incorporates "Only One" through its unique weapon system. Each weapon you pick up can only be used only one time before shattering, and the game's loop is built around killing enemies and stealing their weapons.

The game can be controlled with keyboard or gamepad.

Thank you for playing!

The mechanic is nice, but the keyboard controls are awful; they really ruin the game. Perhaps it's fine on a controller, but both should be good. Here are the controls, for those wondering how to play:

  • Move with left and right arrow
  • Jump with space
  • Dash/pick up weapon with shift
  • Attack by holding down ctrl

The issue is that you constantly have to adjust the position of your fingers. Though it is nice that both left and right shift/ctrl work. I propose this control mapping:

  • Move with arrows or wasd
  • Jump with space, up arrow or w
  • Dash with shift
  • Pick up with down arrow or s (or just automatically pick them up)
  • Attack by holding down ctrl

attack by holding ctrl"

who the fuck uses that

Well done! I really like the idea and the controls feels good with a gamepad. On the keyboard I found it much harder to play. That the character moves while pickung up the sword is also a little bit tricky. But maybe intended? I also like the graphics.

Thank you for this great litte game.

I beg you this is my favorite indie game after celeste I've ever played please make a full game. I'm sure myself and others would be willing to do so.

Hmmm that's odd. Could you try downloading the .zip and seeing if that works instead?. If that doesn't work, maybe try downloading from the jam submission page instead? https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461132  I'm really not sure what the issue could be, and I'm sorry you're having trouble with it

this is such a cool concept and the art style & animation is SO COOL!!
love it! what programmer did you use to animate?

I'm unable to continue past the first slide showing "the blue oni giri." I've downloaded both versions, pushed every button, plugged in my controller, and nothing is working. What can I do about this?

( 2)

Try Spacebar, that's the key that works for me.

EVERY button.

If your controller is plugged in, make sure you have XInput drivers and are using a tool like DS4 Tool if you’re using a DualShock controller. Otherwise, try unplugging your controller and see if the keyboard inputs start working for you. Sorry to hear your having issues, and I hope you’re able to get it to work!

Sorry, but I used the keyboard first and then plugged in the controller. The game just isn't working for me.

While I think the weapon mechanic was good, I did run into a couple problems while playing the game. Firstly, at the tutorial, I used all the swords given to me to hit the dummy, so when I entered the first stage, I didn't have a weapon to use. Because of this, my only option was to repeatedly dash through the stage, which didn't feel like a good introduction to your game. You were good about giving the player weapons for the other levels, it just feels like the first level was a bit of an oversight.

Secondly, I don't think the option for a fast movement option is exactly necessary or even good here - several times I would accidentally start to dash, and then when I used a sword slice, I would move so far ahead that I would have to backtrack to grab the sword. Sometimes it felt unaccounted for and annoying.

That being said, I adore the art. Jack McGee is one of my favorite artists on Twitter and it was cool to see his art in a video game.

Thank you for your feedback! The parry/block mechanic is meant to be used in situations where you’re without a weapon, but I wasn’t able to make it as polished or emphasized as I would’ve liked to for the jam version. I’ll be sure to keep your criticisms in mind while making improvements for the jam version!

Hi! Really enjoyed your game, it's super cute and I love the weapon mechanic. The only thing I wish was different is the jump button, because it feels far away from the left shift and control button. Perhaps changing it to Alt will fix it?

Also, it would be much handier if there was jump sensitivity, like if you held the jump button down longer, you'll jump higher. I ran into a problem on the second stage where I wanted to mini jump onto a platform to collect a sword, but would jump too high and hit my head on the weasel projectiles.

Again, amazing game! looking forward to see how it goes in the game jam! <3

And just replacing the arrows with wasd would allow you to play with just one hand
