'time' 명령은 인수로 다른 프로그램을 실행시키며, 그래서 프로그램이 실행되는 동안 시스템이 수집한, 프로그램이 사용한 리소스에 대한 정보를 화면에 표시합 니다. 'time' 명령이 보여주는 정보와 포맷은 사용자가 선택할 수 있으며, 또는 화면에 표시하는 대신 파일로 저장 할 수도 있습니다.

'time'이 보고하는 리소스는 시간, 메모리, I/O, 그리고 IPC 호출등 일반적인 범 주로 분류됩니다.

GNU 버전은 여러가지 리소스 측량값을 포함하는 문자열을 printf 스타일 포맷을 사용해서 임의의 방법으로 출력을 구성할 수 있습니다.
