libevent è una libreria di notificazione degli eventi asincroni che fornisce un meccanismo per eseguire una funzione di callback quando su un descrittore di file avviene un determinato evento o dopo che è scaduto un timeout.

È pensata per sostituire l'event loop asincrono nei server di rete pilotati da eventi. Attualmente, libevent gestisce /dev/poll, kqueue(2), porte per eventi, select(2), poll(2) ed epoll(4).

Se si desidera la gestione dei thread e si sta utilizzando pthreads, è necessario fare il link alla libreria libevent_pthreads oltre che a libevent_core.
