To commemorate the International Women's Day, Wikimedia Argentina and the International Network of Gender Journalists made an edit-a-thon about women rights. As a result of the edit-a-thon, we creat articles such as the The international Women's Strike, which was fundamental to the current feminist movement.

Books donation

The Academia Argentina de Letras donated to Wikimedia Argentina 34 books, most of them are rare books from the XIX century. The whole campaign is uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and you can see it right here.

Serving up Citations

On Friday, 17 March the State Library of New South Wales hosted food studies scholars, brought together by Central Queensland University, to participate in Wikipedia training and contribute to a food-focused edit-a-thon. The group focused on learning how to add citations to Wikipedia articles and added several citations to articles, about food, using resources held at the Library.


Children Literature project's second edition

Following last year's experience, the Children's Literature Documentation Centre of Donostia, the College of Education of the Basque Country University, with the collaboration of BWUG, have organized the Children's Literature Wikiproject 2017. In this three program involving three institutions, the main subject will be the creation and development in the Basque Wikipedia of 17 main characters of children literature (Robin Hood, Elmer, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood...). Education College students are working on these articles as part of their studies, taking good advantage of the large volume of material on children literature held in the Children's Literature Documentation Centre.

Wikimedian in residence

On 22th March, Leire Cano started working for five months as a Wikimedian-in-Residence in the Children's Literature Documentation Centre. She will help and monitor the main program. She will also work in releasing some material related to children literature, such as book covers, illustrations, drawings... This year we are going to put our best in recording voices of Basque children literature writers. Therefore, she will record a short introduction of herself in order to include the voices in their articles' infoboxes. In addition, she will ask them to read a short piece of their work that she will insert in the book's related article.

On 6 March the annual conference Open Belgium took place in Brussels in a building at Tour & Taxis. The conference is organised by the Open Knowledge Foundation Belgium, with support from Wikimedia Belgium. The conference serves as showcase for free knowledge projects with GLAMs and governmental organisations in Belgium. During the conference also a presentation was given about the gendergap on Wikipedia.

On 8 March 2017, at International Women's Day, Just For The Record organised an Art Feminism session in Brussels. This session was hosted at the Royal Library of Belgium. About 50 people participated in this event and wrote articles on Wikipedia. (project page)

On 23 and 24 march we gave two sessions in what staff of various libraries in Flemish Brabant were teached about Wikipedia, Wikimedia and more. The two sessions took place in two different places, one in the western side of the province (Relegem/Zellik) and one in the eastern side (Leuven). The sessions included also that each of the participants wrote a basic article on Wikipedia to get a better understanding how editing on Wikipedia works, and what you need to do to get a good article. With 18 participants in the two sessions together, this resulted in 19 articles written. (project page)


First museum photo-thon in Bulgaria

On March 11, the National Polytechnical Museum in Sofia hosted the first ever Wikimedia photo-thon in Bulgaria in collaboration with the Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group. The event was open for attendance – and well attended not only by Wikimedians, but also by photographers and families with kids, who could learn about the history of technics, technologies and science in this proactive and non-traditional way.

In 2017, the Museum observes its 60-th anniversary and the Wikimedian photo-thon was one of the 60 special events included in the celebration programme throughout the year, all aimed at drawing attention to the fascinating world of science and technology. Expectedly, the event resulted in many Wikipedia articles being illustrated and even some new articles created.

Weeks before the photography marathon, a Facebook event was created and popularized among Wikimedians, photographers and media. A press publication in the online news site "Dnevnik" announced the event in advance, and a photo gallery covered it, and a live reportage for the private national TV channel "bTV" featured an interview with one of the Wikimedians who organized the photo-thon. A detailed guide to museum photography was developed and printed for the visitors for reference purposes and will serve future GLAM photo-thons as well.

What is specific about some of the exhibits in the National Polytechnical Museum is that they allow for not only capturing in plain photos, but also in videos, demonstrating their full capacity of operation. Due to the limited time, however, few of the 8000 exhibits could be captured in multimedia, thus allowing for another photo-thon to be organized in future, with more attention to the physical and chemical experiments that can be demonstrated by the museum staff.

In recent years, the community behind the Bulgarian version of Wikipedia has been interested in and open for various collaborations with cultural and educational institutions, which has resulted in generation of available and high quality encyclopedic and educational content. Specifically the collaboration between the "Wikimedians of Bulgaria" UG and the National Polytechnical Museum dates back to early 2016, when the museum hosted the national conference "Volunteers in Bulgarian museums" organized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and for the first time there was a dedicated lecture about the Wikimedia/GLAM partnerships and the opportunities Wikimedia gives to museums to develop in the digital age.

Thus, during the photo-thon, a presentation about Wikipedia was again given to the interested museum visitors, who were also able to meet six of the most active Bulgarian Wiki[p,m]edians, who also helped for the upload of the content, produced during the event. 205 new files were uploaded as a result of the photo-thon, compared to less than 10 available photos in Commons before the event. Many of these new images are 360-degrees photographies. Already, almost 10% of these new uploads are already in use in the Bulgarian and English Wikipedia.


Editing during International Francophone Contribution Month

As one of our key cultural institution partners, the Francophonie in Abidjan was asked to host our March edit-a-thon. This editing session, held on 18 March, was part of the International Francophone Contribution Month, a period during which volunteers across French-speaking countries carry out various types of events, ranging from edit-a-thons, presentations, to photo hunts. The Wikimedians of Côte d'Ivoire (WCUG-CI) seized that occasion to organize a three-hours collaborative workshop, aiming at improving articles about women politicians from Côte d'Ivoire and teaching newbies what Wikipedia and its sister projects are about.

Already the third workshop about Trains and rail transport in the museum of Brittany (musée de Bretagne). The next workshop will be on May, 20 in the Rennes City Archives ; two members of these Archives were here to learn how to import files on Wikimedia Commons and how to use them.

Edit-a-thon at the National Archaeological Museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye

An edit-a-thon was conducted at the French National Archaeological Museum (musée d'Archéologie nationale) in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on march, 27th 2017. The goal was to improve the article about the museum in French and English and to create other pages in French about the creation of the museum by Napoleon III. Several photographers were allowed to take pictures of parts of the museum usually closed to the public like the roofs, the moats and the archives: Edit-a-thon Musée d'Archéologie nationale 2017.


Change Your mind

Making licensing easier for GLAM staff

Our goal: Working in the GLAM field we like to obtain as much content under free license as possible from the GLAM institutions. Yet talking to staff in GLAM institutions we very often we met the statement: "We would like to share our content under free license, but we do not know how to do it. It seems so complicated. We would like to have one license that fits all. As it doesn't work, we'd rather leave it for an other day." I am sure you often heard the same. The problem is obvious: GLAM staff needs to be enabled to deal the 'license thing'. Together with GLAM people and the German Digital Library we have developed a workshop on free license. We call it "©© Change your mind". Because we want the attendees to change their mind to how easy it is to apply free license from case to case. Albeit you have to bear in mind some advices and this is the witty point, yes there are media files or other content that you will not release for reuse. We explain to them three options 1) public domain,2) CC BY and 3) "not fit for reuse". That is the theory. Then comes the fun part. They get examples they have to label themselves and we assign each one of them through a lottery either as promoter for free license, as opponent or as moderator. This gets the debate vivid and will make people really change their minds. Because we know, often it needs an open mind to create open data. In March we ran the workshop "©© Change your mind" the 5th time. In Bonn 24 persons from from 15 GLAM institutions attended the workshop. And more workshops will come. We'd like you to copy the idea. Please start from the learning learning pattern, do come with comments or questions and let us know how you make GLAM people changing their minds on free license.

Make war edit-a-thons, not war

On March 25th the Italian War History Museum (Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra) in Rovereto (Autonomous Province of Trento) hosted a edit-a-thon! The Museum had already hosted a guided tour of a group of Wikimedians in December 2016, but this time after the visit people sat down to contribute to Wikimedia projects! More than 20 people participated, creating or editing 20 articles on Italian Wikipedia (among them an Italian military radiology unit, Lantaka and Kappenabzeichen) and uploading more than 80 photos on Commons.

Matteo Ruffoni and Valeria Framondino (middle school teachers who are using wiki at school) came and brought some of their students: the boys had fun with Wikipedia, Commons but (with the help of Marco Fossati) also with Wikidata! See Matfil04 here? He's at his second year in middle school (7th grade)!

The event also hosted the award ceremony of Wiki Loves Trentino 2016!

What about giving new life to historical archives? Marco Chemello - Wikipedian in residence at BEIC - presented at the national convention of the Italian libraries (Palazzo delle Stelline, Milan, 16-17 March) a beta version - developed by Paolo Frizzera - for browsing the Paolo Monti photographic Archive on OpenStreetMap. Paolo Monti was a notable Italian photographer active from the 1940s to 1982 and one year ago the BEIC Digital Library shared 16900 of his wonderful images on Wikimedia Commons. Now you can see 1000 of them on 3000 Wikipedia articles on 117 different wikis. 5000 photographs (30%) were also geo-tagged adding coordinates and now you can browse them, by year or subject.

As a User Group, GLAM Macedonia signed agreement with The State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia (DARM) to continue with a good collaboration in 2017. The very first project we started to work together with the DARM employees is the project about Macedonian voivode and revolutionaries. The aim of the project is to check data in articles on mk.wiki about Macedonian voivode and to create a new articles for persons from the Macedonian history which do not exist on mk.wiki. The project starts on 20 January 2017, after signing agreement for collaboration between the Archives and GLAM Macedonia.

The idea of this activity comes after the historians, employees at the State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia, noticed that many existing articles on mk.wiki about Macedonian voivode have a wrong data or have no references. The Board members of GLAM Macedonia decided that we are going to fulfill this task. The team who work on this project consists of several DARM employees and several Wikipedians:

Also, the Board decided to send Violetova as a contact with DARM employees, who provide Wikipedians with books and materials about Macedonian voivode and revolutionaries. MB and Rašo mk are providing a big help with checking existing articles, adding references, and creating new articles about the theme of this project. At the half way till the end of this project, we already checked over 150 existing articles, edited them with more info, added references, and we created 38 new articles.

We expect to finish this project at the end of June 2017. We need a period of six months, because Wikipedians who participate on this project are volunteers, using their free time to finish this task.

Editing day on Rivers in Macedonia

The tenure of our long-time contributor Mario Šarevski as a Wikipedian in residence at the Library of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences of Arts resulted in the liberation, digitisation and upload of important books as reference works, including a recent work titled The rivers in Macedonia (Macedonian: Реките во Македонија) which presents a compilation of information about the rivers in Macedonia sorted in alphabetical order.

For that purpose, the members of Shared Knowledge decided to determine an editing day with the goal of engaging the Macedonian Wikipedia community in using this valuable work to create local content on the Macedonian Wikipedia and have therefore set up 26 March as an editing day on the topic "Rivers in Macedonia". The outcome of the day was decently high with participation of seven editors who have created a total of 68 articles, making it the most successful editing day so far both in terms of participation and article creation.

Following the success of this editing challenge, our organisation will consider similar activities in the future aimed at making use of the liberated and digitised collection of works in generating content on the Wikimedia projects.


Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform; photohunt Egmond aan Zee; Iconographia Zoologica

Wikimedia Nederland launched the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform. The platform aims to stimulate global re-use of Dutch collections on non-European cultural heritage. In particular, it aims to stimulate collections on countries with which the Netherlands have had historical ties. These countries include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Ghana, Suriname, South Africa, and others.

The platform also aims to foster contacts between Dutch cultural heritage institutions and Wikimedia contributors across the globe. However, participation is not limited to Wikimedia contributors. Anyone can participate, making it relevant for education and research as well.

Key properties:

  • Dutch heritage institutions can post offers on (parts of) their collections that are relevant to non-European countries
  • Wikimedia contributors gain insight in the contents of Dutch collections and can make requests for digitalisation.
  • Knowledge exchange and cooperation are key concepts.

The platform is easy to use. After registration, users can post offer/requests notices, depending on whether they are looking for material, or want to offer material for re-use. Statistics on re-use are also available.

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform is part of the program The Netherlands and the World. This program is supported by Wikimedia Nederland and aims to make available knowledge and content on non-European countries.

Wikimedia Commons photohunt Egmond aan Zee

The Kennemerwaard public library held a photohunt in Egmond aan Zee on 31 March to take pictures of local heritage for Wikimedia Commons. First uploads can be seen here. This activity is part of the program of WMNL.

Iconographia Zoologica

The Artis library at the Plantage Middenlaan is part of the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam library. They donated 26,500 images from the Iconographia Zoologica to Wikimedia Commons. The collection consists of often hard-coloured drawings.

Between March 2 and 13 a new Wikipedia course was held in La Yutera Library, in Palencia, belonging to the University of Valladolid. Throughout four sessions, 8 people learned basic knowledge about Wikipedia and how to collaborate and started their first articles.

Women´s Day Editathons

On the occasion of the International Women's Day several editathons were held focusing on the creation of content on women and involving more women in the editing process. Most of these events were held in a library.

On March 4 was held the editathon Art Feminism in Valencia, in the public library Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas. On March 8 in the library Joan Reglà in Valencia, focused on women and archaeology. The same topic was chosen for the event of March 9, also in Valencia, in the library of the Museum of Prehistory, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia. Finally, on March 11, an editathon took place in the library of the National Archaeological Museum, in Madrid, also focused on women and archaeology.

Art Feminism 2017

The edit-a-thon Art Feminism was held at the Royal Armoury in Stockholm, on the 8th of March. About 80 participants showed up and contributed to Wikipedia.

Two appreciated events took place during the day – apart from the editing. Between editing articles visitors could join a guided tour of the museum. And at the end of the evening the journalists and film makers Wanda Bendjelloul and Katarina Hellberg presented their work to make visible women photographers who played a big part in the Swedish history of photography, in their movie "Upphovsmannen var en kvinna".

The result of the edit-a-thon was around 50 new articles and a lot more edits. The day was a great success and several media – newspapers and local television – reported from the edit-a-thon. The participants were very diligent and the atmosphere was great and everybody helped each other to make great contributions.

Connected Open Heritage

In March, only a few days were spent on the preparations for the batchupload of images from the Swedish Cyprus Expedition due to vacation.

On the Wikidata front, we have been working on uploading some datasets of Swedish cultural heritage. We started off with about 1,400 working life museums – a special type of museum commemorating our industrial heritage, such as the Shoe Industry Museum in Kumla. Since they all have coordinates, you can get an overview of their distribution on a map. We have also added over a hundred listed historical ships.

We've just started uploading the by far largest dataset in the Wiki Loves Monuments database, that of Swedish ancient monuments. It contains over 145 thousands items: runestones, cairns, petroglyphs and many other types of archaeological objects. Each of them an invaluable source of knowledge about our past, soon possible to be queried through Wikidata.

Digikult

Digikult celebrated its 5th anniversary this year as a conference with focus on digital heritage. During the two days a variety of topics were covered in both inspirational and informational form. Among the inspirational takeaways were Wolfgang Wild, founder of the history brand Retronaut, talking about the SPEED (Seen, Positive, Easy, Emotive, Disruptive) model in creating viral success and Viktor Lindbäck, founder of Platsminnen (i.e. Place Memories), a tool using old images from cultural institutions to help elderly people with reminiscence training by showing them environments and content from their younger years. Among the informational presentations were the talk by Frida Starck Lindfors about Stockholmskällan and how the project Välkommen till min plats (i.e. Welcome to my neighborhood) helped in gathering new material to the historical digital portal as the project worked with students from parts of the city that previously were not that well covered and Alexy Karenowska from The Institute for Digital Archaeology who talked about the Million Image Database and the reconstruction of a scale model of the Triumphal Arch of Palmyra using 3D techniques and putting it in places like Trafalgar Square, London, and at the Venice Biennale to raise awareness of both the situation and the current state of antiquities in Palmyra.

1 March 2017 a new regular edit-a-thon started in my hometown of Gothenburg, this time centered around art. Every Wednesday afternoon we gather around a table in the reading room at Göteborgs Konsthall, at the centre of town. This regular event, simply called Konst på Wikipedia ('Art on Wikipedia'), is a collaboration between Göteborgs Konsthall (the town gallery, founded in 1923) and Wikimedia Sverige. A couple of regular local editors create the backbone, with visitors and other editors joining in at irregular intervals. So far the attendance levels have been just as irregular, but slowly we gather more attention, from spreading news through various channels. At the edit-a-thon we welcome both newcomers and veterans, to learn from each other and make the concept of Wikipedia as a useful information tool around art more known.

This event is open the last three hours every Wednesday when the gallery is open – i.e. most of the weeks. As an event it is a spin-off from the related Kvinnliga huvudpersoner på Wikipedia, where local wikipedians have been gathering nearly every Tuesday since March 2014. That regular edit-a-thon, also a WMSE-sponsored event, regularly sees at least half a dozen editors from 13:00 to (at least) 17:00 hours. It takes place in Litteraturhuset, a cultural centre with a lot of related events and activities ("Hi! Your article on Wikipedia doesn't have a photo. Do you mind if I take a photo of you?"). And we hope that Wednesdays at the gallery also slowly could gain momentum. Examples of the articles edited or created so far are listed here. And a related wish list is slowly getting bigger here.

Writing about Gothenburg's history

22 March 2017 wikipedians in Gothenburg started a new edith-a-thon together with the local history association in Gothenburg. The purpose is to write new, and enhance existing, articles about Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city, on Swedish Wikipedia. We get access to their archive with a lot of books, old newspapers, folders, photos and other sources, which can be used for Wikipedia articles. Hopefully we can get members of the local history association interested in Wikipedia and engage them as new editors. The chairman of the association hopes that they, by the collaboration with Wikipedia, can reach a new group of people interested in local history, and to get the information in the archive used.

The edit-a-thons will be held biweekly during the spring, on Wednesday from 18.00 to 20.00. At the first meeting we got information about what we can find in the archive, and wrote a short article about Göteborgs Mössfabriks AB, a company manufacturing caps and hats from 1892. Two weeks later, we improved the article about the local School of Design and Crafts with information about its history.

Since 2011 we have a project concerning Gothenburg on Swedish Wikipedia. The collaboration with the local history association can also give us contacts with the local museum and other organizations in Gothenburg. The new edit-a-thon was recognized by the local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten which had a short news item about it and gave a link to our wiki meetup page.

Updating image description with new research results

Together with the Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum (LSH) Wikimedia Sverige has during several years worked to upload almost 47,000 high resolution images from the museum collections. These collections are still evolving though as research is continuously being done on the objects included in them. Descriptions, dates and other facts may change after we have uploaded the image of the item to Wikimedia Commons and we are faced with the challenge of updating the information there. At the same time Wikimedia Commons is also very much alive and the image pages undergo multiple edits by the time we discover that some of the information might be outdated.

As a pilot project we looked at a collection of 737 images of Chinese porcelain where substantial research had been done since we uploaded the images in 2014. We developed a script which managed to update 711 of these images with new and richer information without a single user edit getting overwritten. We chose not to update the remaining 26 images automatically but the script would also allow for easy inspection of the remaining images so that user changes can be identified and re-added after an upload.


Wicipop project in Wales; Wikimedia UK's impact report

In Wales we have just completed a 3 month Welsh Government funded project to improve Welsh language Wikipedia content on Pop Music. Executed by the National Library of Wales and supported by Wikimedia UK the project focused on finding a balance between using open data to generate new articles, community engagement and securing the release of text and media from Welsh language content producers, such as publishers, production companies, universities and record labels. The project was a great success, producing 3 public events and nearly 800 new article (smashing the 500 article target). The project also lead to the donation of a large amount of media which will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in the coming months (more on that soon). The project has demonstrated a model of engagement which can significantly grow the quality and quantity of Welsh Wicipedia articles, whilst also establishing sustainable communities of editors and open content producers.

  • Funding from Oxford University's Innovation Fund to support a university-wide Wikimedian in Residence - building on the success of the initial one year residency at Bodleian Libraries - who is now making significant strides within the university’s research community
  • Achieving gender balance in articles about people on the Welsh language Wikipedia - a first for any Wikipedia with more than 10,000 articles - and growing the Wicipedia to 90,000 articles

Art Feminism and The Women You Have Never Met

WikiProject Women in Red held a month long virtual meetup, WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/37 in support of Art Feminism.

Art And Feminism: Greater Philadelphia

Art and Feminism continues to grow in the Philadelphia area. This year there were at least six edit-a-thons in the area: Temple University, Saint Joseph's University (by video conference with Temple), Moore College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, Bryn Mawr College, and Philadelphia Museum of Art. My impression is that most people attending this year have at least some experience editing and that the number of people with no experience at all is smaller. Editors may also be more likely this year to improve existing articles rather than to try to create new ones. People who attended Art And Feminism events in previous years are now hosting their own events.

Thanks to everyone who organized, hosted and attended events! Most events did not have a specific focus for editing. However, the Philadelphia Museum of Art event highlighted women watercolorists from their current show American Watercolor in the Age of Homer and Sargent. The associated published book is a terrific resource containing lots of research about women artists and their works. Kathleen Foster, the curator of the show, attended the edit-a-thon. A teacher from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) who is using Wikipedia in her class also brought her class to PMA. It was a day-long event, where a number of new articles were created.

We advertised upcoming edit-a-thons at events throughout Women's History Month. We also announced a new WikiSalon, an open editing and coaching session which will occur on the second Saturday of each month, at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, from 1-3 p.m. The first WikiSalon with be on Saturday, April 8, 2017. We encourage editors to bring their Art And Feminism articles, or other topics of interest, to the WikiSalon for further help, feedback, and mutual enthusiasm.

Wikipedia Libraries: Better Together Update

This is an update about Wikipedia Libraries: Better Together, a project focused on the "L" in GLAM! Wikipedia Libraries is a 16-month project to bring together Wikipedia and public libraries in the U.S. The most recent news is that Monika Sengul-Jones (me!) has joined OCLC as the Wikipedian-in-Residence. I'm working with the WebJunction team to design and deliver an online training program for hundreds of U.S. public library staff to learn about Wikipedia and what it can bring to their libraries and patrons. I'm also in the position to build connections/facilitate communication between public libraries and Wikipedians/Wikimedians. In the next few months, we're doing an awareness building campaign that will highlight the positive impact that Wikipedia engagement has brought to public libraries already. I'd love to hear from public library staff about their experiences with Wikipedia/Wikimedia. Read the grant page timeline and/or the WebJunction project page and news feed for future updates and to learn more about the project.

The following represents a selection of the files that have been uploaded this month from open-access sources. Most of these (about 600) came from PubMed Central through the Open Access Media Importer — whose uploads now stand at over 33,600. If you can think of wiki pages where these files (or other files from the same source articles) could be useful, please put them in there or let us know. Several of them have already been reused this way, along with many others that had been uploaded earlier.

As part of the broader support of program leaders and the movement strategy, Alex attended Wikimedia Conference. He supported several workshops, including:

Other highlights from the conference include a strong interest from the attendees in library partnerships: many emerging communities are finding libraries as a clear entry point for GLAM skill development among community program leaders, and for proof of concept for other GLAM work. Additionally, the movement strategy process has a number of GLAM-Wiki advocates, so they provided significant feedback and advocacy for the knowledge and experience we have developed doing programmatic outreach in the GLAM-Wiki community.

Consultations

Most of the consultative time for Alex during March focused on the development of Structured Data on Commons and developing the Annual Plan in the Wikimedia Foundation. Other support included:

  • Shannon Perry at Libraries and Archives Canada
  • Connection with the Global Heritage Foundation
  • Development of materials to support a visit by Katherine Maher with WMDC to the Smithsonian, National Archive and Library of Congress
  • Internet Archive support of Wikidata
