Surviving the Impossible - A Glimpse Into Life Under Siege

This is a single comic strip digitally drawn and colored, separated into two larger portions. The first larger portion depicts a family in Gaza, sitting in a tent at night, huddled around a fire thatALT

Amid the ruins of war, where safety has become a distant memory, a family in Gaza struggles to survive against unimaginable challenges. The skyrocketing prices of basic necessities where a kilogram of flour that once cost a dollar now costs $20 have turned daily survival into an arduous battle. (1 kilogram equals 2.2 pounds).

A child is holding a small bag of flour, looking at the camera while walking.ALT
This is another picture of the bag of flour, held close the the camera.ALT

The family gathers under a fragile tent around a weak fire, baking their bread on an old griddle to stave off hunger and warm their bodies against the biting winter cold. Their faces tell stories of exhaustion, resilience, and unbreakable hope. Despite the harsh winds and constant fear, they hold onto each other, drawing strength from the bonds of family that keep them together.

I collaborated with @drdarine and @dawoudi to shed some light on their family and their struggles. This drawing is not just a depiction of suffering but a humanitarian call for solidarity and reflection - these individuals aren"t just numbers on news reports, they"re people who had their dreams and hopes forcibly taken away.

This isn"t just a story, but a call for awareness and action. Families in Gaza, like this one, urgently need our support. By sharing their stories, raising awareness, or contributing to humanitarian efforts, we can be part of the change they so desperately need under this period of unimaginable suffering.

It’s the summer of 2020. After two weeks of quarantine, Java, my computer girl, is successfully introduced to the other foster kittens in residence, those being the Goddesses of Night, Nyx and Oasis, and the Tigers, Lily, Roxanne and Manti.

On my walk today, I stared at the stars in the sky. Yesterday, there were none to be seen, clouds blocking the view. But tonight they shine.

Abysmally few of them. I can just about see the constellation that I know as the Big Bear. It’s faint, and even though I know exactly how to find it in relation to its big brother, I fail to spot the Little one. The only other constellation I recognise is Orion. Its belt is unmistakable during winter in the northern hemisphere.

There are simply too many lights.

I’ve never seen the real night sky.

seeing people care about literally any animal other than the ones on their plate is heartbreaking.

it"s always about fur and leather and animal testing being bad. and it"s sad when a seal is trapped in a net.

but when a pig is living with disease in a tiny pen where they can barely stand and then slaughtered in terrible ways, no one cares. when a cow is raped and their baby is taken away from them and their milk is also taken, no one cares.

the cognitive dissonance is everywhere. if you"re a feminist or you care about deforestation and climate change, then veganism is the only way.

‼️Helping me means helping 5 members of my family..‼️

🥶We"re freezing🥶

Hello, I"m Wasim from Gaza, in Al-Mawasi specifically... My family and I were displaced from Rafah after hardship, bombing, displacement, and hunger.😭😔

Now we have been away from our city and our beautiful home for 9 months. We have lost our house that my father built stone by stone and he worked 24/7 to build this house. But the occupation destroyed it, and no house remained in my beautiful city remained intact.😭💔💔

image
image
image

We are now living in a tent or semi-tent, which does not protect us from the cold of winter or the rain. Our lives are very difficult.😔😭

Thanks to your donations, we have been able to buy food and flour, and now I am asking you for help to buy a tent that will protect us from the cold of winter. We do not know what it means to sleep because of the extreme cold.🥶

image
image

This is our tent made of fabric and some nylon, not closed on one side. We are freezing from the cold. Help us to buy a new tent. You are our last hope.😭🥶🥶🙏

I also want to ask for help for my mother, who is the most precious thing in my life. Without her, I am nothing...

She has a back cartilage disease and is in great pain. She needs physical therapy, medicine, and vitamins, and I am unable to provide them. Help my mother receive treatment.🙏🙏😭

I am Hani Al-Sharif from Gaza 🍉. I support a family of 7 people. My wife and children (Tala, Razan, Lina, Saba, and Muhammad). I have a gofundme campaign that I created for my daughter Razan, who lost her hearing in the war and needs a cochlear implant, and also to protect my family from hunger, and get them out of the danger of the war in Gaza 🍉. We live in very difficult circumstances. Help me, we are still far from achieving our dream. I hope everyone will donate even a little. I am confident that you will stand with me and support me until I achieve my daughter’s dream of regaining her hearing again Share my story

since it’s a scary time to be trans: refuge restrooms is an app which maps gender-neutral/single-stall restrooms. it’s community-mapped, so it’s possible you might be the first person to log the restroom locations, but hopefully it’ll help some people.

please reblog this post if you’ve got trans followers. stay safe.

shanology

For my non-trans followers: please consider getting the app just so you can add neutral restrooms to the map when you run across them. Simple way to help.

It took me a whole day searching for a hopeful photo of me in Gaza, to share today, celebrating the ceasefire. And I found this one, me and my friend Ahmed happy with a group of children. I won"t attach the multiple pictures of skeletons, some unidentified in the streets, some with bullet holes in the skulls left in family homes.

This is the first day of a very, very long journey, still perilous because Trump can"t be trusted either. Please continue to boost Palestinians and donate to fundraisers.

Leaving you with Jehad Abu Shamala raising the call to prayer in Gaza this morning.
