New Zealand companies face significant barriers in adapting to the growing requirements for improved environmental performance. In comparison to large companies Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) have limited resources for voluntary improvement initiatives and lack specialist sustainability expertise. Existing environmental improvement methods are not suited to the characteristics and requirements of SMEs. The aim of my PhD was to develop a strategic framework for manufacturing SMEs to progressively implement and integrate environmental sustainability into their day-to-day operations. As a result of the research, I established the ecoWheel framework which has been successfully implemented in a range of New Zealand organisations leading to considerable environmental and commercial benefits.

I graduated as senior scholar in my Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering class. I was particularly interested in manufacturing related papers such as Technology Management, Design, Manufacturing Processes and Systems, and Advanced Operations Management. Throughout my bachelor degree I developed an interest in sustainability, and in particular in the development of environmentally benign products and production processes.
