About us

Whānau Ora is a culturally-based, and whānau-centred approach to wellbeing focused on whānau (family group) as a whole, as the decision-makers who determine their goals and aspirations. Building on the strengths and capabilities of whānau and wrapping the necessary services and support around them to get better outcomes and create positive changes. In areas such as health, education, housing, employment, improved standards of living and cultural identity. Whānau are supported to fully realise the confidence, mana and the belief in self, family and community. Delivering Whānau Ora through Non-Government Organisation’s means decision-making happens free from an overly risk-averse and micro-managed environment. Community-based Whānau Ora partners sit in the communities they support. They can use local knowledge and adapt to issues happening in their community. It helps grow adaptive ideas, innovative thinking and solutions when it comes to providing local support. Whānau Ora have specialist staff who act as navigators and advocate for whānau. They work with whānau to find the services and support needed. The Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency has always been on a journey of self discovery, self-management and self-determination. This journey must encompass various paths where we showcase our capabilities and strengths. For too long others have spoken on behalf of us and defined us. Now is the time to demonstrate that we have always possessed the ability and potential. Never again shall we lower our heads in doubt of our worthiness to embark on any journey To Motion Sickness, our success owes much to this new generation of Tangata Tīriti and Tangata whenua who supported us. Motion Sickness, with its understanding of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori, made the impossible possible.  Our collaboration, embracing equality and our worldview, signals a new generation where Māori culture shines globally with ground breaking creativity.

  • Our whānau has made an impact on the global stage. Census turnout was lower than expected last year, especially within our Māori and Pacific communities. Area codes carry profound significance, reflecting both whakapapa and identity. To connect our whānau with their local whakapapa, our Te Pae Herenga o Tāmaki whānau collaborated with Motion Sickness to create a one-of-a-kind pop-up waka, offering exclusive merchandise tailored to each area code — items unavailable anywhere else. The only way people could get a piece of gear and rep their suburb was by completing their Census form. The "rep tour suburb" campaign has garnered a nomination for the esteemed Spikes Asia awards. These honours not only celebrate creative brilliance but also recognise effective marketing strategies throughout the Asia-Pacific region. It's incredible to witness Māori representing Aotearoa on a global platform with such strength and pride.

  • Our Te Pae Herenga o Tāmaki Collective have officially welcomed their Whānau Ora Health Care Assistants (HCAs) with a Pōhiri at Papakura Marae. As part of our Whānau Ora Winter Wellness Vaccination campaign, four HCAs will be deployed across our partners Huakina Development Trust, Manurewa Marae and Papakura Marae. Papakura Marae CE Tony Kake welcomed the addition of these internationally qualified nurses. “We are happy to receive these taonga to work with us and help lift the immunisation rates for our whānau.”
