Thousands of gamers gathered at Tāmaki Makaurau's Spark Arena over the weekend to experience Aotearoa's ultimate gaming festival called Spark Game Arena Live. The festival redefined what a gaming festival can be with the addition of Killabyte - a fully immersive gaming experience that turned every attendee into a player in a big virtual snake hunt. Upon arrival, gamers at the event found themselves part of a secret organisation called D.A.R.T. (Data Anomaly Response Team), tasked with taking down one of the biggest bosses the gaming world has ever seen, Byte. Byte is a giant digital snake that had attempted to take down the festival on a mission to drag gaming back to the brick phone era of black and white pixel games. Attendees also watched the biggest live esports final to take place at Spark Arena where Rangitoto College student Henry Dowson was crowned the winner of ‘The Rise Cup featuring Fortnite’ – a nationwide tournament culminating in the top 50 finalists battling it out for a share of the prize pool worth over $240,000. Dowson took home $35,000 cash alongside over $3,000 worth of gaming equipment. A massive ngā mihi nui to all our partners, sponsors and Spark whānau who helped bring this epic event to life. Game on!

Skinny Jump is proud to partner with Red Cross on the Awhi Matihiko programme. For refugees, getting connected to the internet is vital for settling in a new country, learning a new language, and staying in touch with their families and friends. You can read more about the programme here: https://lnkd.in/eXnEa5qa
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Skinny Jump and Spark New Zealand for their continued support of Awhi Matihiko, a programme that helps some of our newest Kiwis reconnect with the world. Awhi Matihiko enables digital access for former refugees who aren't eligible for other support, settling into their new communities, by providing a wireless broadband connection and Chromebook device upon arrival, facilitated by New Zealand Red Cross. Skinny Jump’s continued role in fostering digital equity and inclusivity for former refugees ensures that these families can stay connected with their loved ones and access important services right from the start. The impact has been nothing short of transformative. Thank you, Skinny Jump, for helping break down barriers and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to connect, belong, and thrive. #SkinnyJump #NewZealandRedCross #RefugeeSupport #AwhiMatihiko #DigitalEquity

We’re proud to support Recycle A Device through Spark New Zealand Foundation. RAD takes second-hand laptops donated by businesses and households, teaches local ākonga (students) to refurbish them, and then gets them into the hands of those who need them the most. RAD is calling for donations of used laptops, so if you or your organisation can help, get in touch with the team.
Every laptop counts. 🌍💻 Ask your organisation to donate their used laptops to Recycle A Device and help close the digital divide in New Zealand. Together, we can make digital excellence our business. #AllTheLaptopsInNZ #DigitalEquity #DigitalExcellence

Matariki celebrations at our Spark offices around the motu took place this week as we remembered those that have passed and celebrated the beginning of the Māori new year. Kai was at the heart of it all alongside kapa haka performances from local rōpu including the amazing Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi and Te Ahurere o te Manawa Tapu. Our people had the opportunity to learn about the nine stars of Matariki through Metia Interactive's game Guardian Maia, make poi with Poi by Jazz, explore Māori arts and crafts marketplaces with local Pākihi Māori, treat themselves to a mirimiri, and even listen to Taonga Pūoro by our very own Liam Dacombe. Ngā mihi nui to all those that made our celebrations so special.
