Last week, some of our team attended the inaugural New Zealand Asian Lawyers Awards. It was fantastic to see a great turnout of Asian lawyers at the event, and to support this important kaupapa. A huge congratulations to Amarind Eng, who was shortlisted for the Young NZ Asian Lawyer of the Year Award 2024, alongside an impressive line-up of other lawyers. 👏 👏 These awards recognise the professional and societal contributions of lawyers of Asian descent, who now make up 12% of all practitioners and nearly a quarter of those with up to seven years' experience. The Attorney General, Hon Judith Collins KC, presented the awards and emphasised the importance of resilience and good humour to a successful legal career. Attendees were also privileged to hear from Sir Anand Satyanand (the judging panel chair) who shared reflections on the progress he had witnessed over his career towards better representation of Asian communities in the profession. It was inspiring for our people to hear Olympic medalist, Eliza McCartney kōrero about her journey learning te reo Māori as part of our celebrations of Mahuru Māori. Eliza also spoke about resilience and her experiences as an Olympic and Commonwealth Games athlete. We came away from the session feeling energised and inspired to embrace, speak, and treasure te reo Māori.
The day Eliza McCartney came to work To complete our celebrations of Mahuru Māori for 2024, our Simpson Grierson whānau invited Olympic medallist, Eliza McCartney to kōrero about her journey learning te reo Māori. Eliza shared it’s not just about mastering a new language, but about embracing culture, community, and personal growth. Eliza also spoke about the resilience it takes to keep going, whether it’s in sport or in life - the determination to keep pushing and be kind to yourself when things don't go as planned – that's where the magic happens. It was a powerful reminder that we don’t need to be perfect in our learning (or in life!) – it’s the effort, the vulnerability, and the commitment that count. Thank you, Eliza McCartney, for sharing your journey with us. You’ve sparked inspiration to learn and reminded us to give it a go, no matter the challenge! #TeReoMāori #MahuruMāori #Resilience #OlympicMindset #SimpsonGrierson

We recently sponsored the NZ Rainbow Excellence Awards, which celebrate workplace leadership, innovation, best practice and collaboration with organisations committed to rainbow diversity and inclusion 🌈 For the last six years we have sponsored the #SimpsonGrierson Impact Award (Program, Policy, Practice) which recognises an organisation or initiative that has tackled a particular issue or opportunity and can demonstrate measurable improvement in rainbow inclusion and wellbeing on a sustained basis. This year’s award was proudly taken home by Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa | Massey University for their strategic approach to rainbow and takatāpui wellbeing, including the launch of their own Rainbow Orientation in 2023. This strategy was so highly regarded it also took home the Partners Life Supreme Award. Thank you to Vaughan Somerville, PhD (head of Simpson Queerson) who presented the Award and delivered a speech that was exceptionally well received by the crowd. Congratulations to all our clients who took home an award on the night: Kiwibank, Les Mills International, and ASB Bank and to all those who were nominated! And a special thank you to Pride Pledge🏳️🌈 for organising the event and being an ongoing champion of diversity and inclusion. Verity Bowring Judy Whiddett Jo Stevenson Jo-Anne Knight

Our Banking & Finance Partner, Josh Cairns spoke to the NBR - National Business Review recently on the need for proper funding mechanisms to be put in place to finance infrastructure projects. "There's plenty of capital that is looking for finance infrastructure to invest in, but to make those assets investable, we need to have the revenue streams to support that finance."
