The country's first Concert for Animals will be broadcast nationwide tomorrow, Tuesday 5 November, to comfort and entertain companion animals and their humans from 6pm till midnight on Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes can be a stressful time for many companion animals, with fireworks causing high levels of anxiety and discomfort around the country. That's why we've teamed up with SPCA New Zealand to curate a night of relaxing, pet-friendly tunes, specifically chosen to ease the burden on your furry friends' ears 💙 This Tuesday 5 November don't miss RNZ’s Concert for Animals! Join us in making sure the evening is full of Bach, not barks. 🐶🎶 Tune in on the radio (RNZ Concert), or stream us from rnz.co.nz, the RNZ App, SKY TV channel 422, or Freeview Channel 51. https://lnkd.in/gw_-RuZW

A podcast taking listeners on a gallery visit with an art critic, an artist and rangatahi Māori; an exploration through New Zealand’s bold Māori art history and its intersection with societal change; and a podcast of collective voices, bringing Māori and Pasifika queer artists, academics and thinkers together to exchange ideas, are the three podcasts that have been backed to bring more arts and culture coverage to New Zealanders’ ears. Creative New Zealand, NZ On Air and RNZ have together supported the podcast proposals through a one-off co-fund designed to address a deficit in media coverage about arts and culture in Aotearoa. RNZ’s Māori Commissioner, Jana Te Nahu Owen, who is a strategic advisor on the co-fund says the three proposals all had a unique and fresh approach to the concept of an arts podcast. “The successful podcast applicants all demonstrated a deep understanding of the fund's purpose by covering a broad range of arts and culture practices and critique. Each podcast responded thoughtfully to the New Mirrors Report and the producers had considered how their concept would translate into a creative and engaging aural experience for the listener.” Read the full release here: https://lnkd.in/g8tTBEjC More information about the fund can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g7vZ8TBi

Our very own Charlotte Cook features in this week's edition of New Zealand Women's Weekly where she talks about her career to date and her approach to journalism that involves authenticity and care. “Sometimes I’m in rooms with some very powerful people,” she says. “Other times, I’m talking to our most vulnerable about survival. And I never treat anyone differently. “Whether you’re a farmer or a beneficiary getting a food parcel, or the Prime Minister of New Zealand, you’re getting the same respect. You’re getting the same version of Charlotte.” Charlotte presents RNZ’s Midday Report at 12-1pm and her podcast Hair and Loathing is available on all streaming platforms. https://lnkd.in/gkJTGVpP Photo credit: New Zealand Women's Weekly/Hagen Hopkins

🎉This week at RNZ we are celebrating an extraordinary milestone - 50 years of service for a true original, Studio Operator Mike Robinson. 🎉 Much loved at RNZ for his indefatigable sense of humour and his vast collection of equally funny t-shirts, Mike first walked through the doors of RNZ five decades ago, back when it was called the New Zealand Broadcast Corporation. Apart from a brief stint in Christchurch in 1980, he's been based in Wellington throughout his impressive career. A keen music fan, Mike will occasionally bring in a guitar from his rather desirable electric guitar collection to the delight of colleagues. What an incredible achievement, congratulations Mike!

RNZ Saturday Morning presenter Susie Ferguson talks to Perlina Lau about her new book 'Bloody Minded' where Ferguson reflects on how a stubborn Scottish child became an award-winning international journalist despite the crippling pain of endometriosis. Ferguson became a war correspondent at just 25 and says to bring to life the scenes in Bloody Minder she drew on an archive of hand-written notes from the time and a bit of "method acting" to recall and describe specific sensations. "The dust of the desert in your mouth is not really like sand because it's really fine. It's more like flour. What is it like to live in that? What is it like trying to run your fingers through your hair but you can't because it's clogged with this really fine dust?" You can listen to the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/g6V8p3Xi

RNZ reporters from the far north to the deep south can now be completely self-sufficient in an emergency for at least 24 hours when normal power and communications are unavailable thanks to the introduction of independent capability in emergency or ICE kits. The ICE kits are designed to be portable enough to fit in a reporter’s car and consist of a Starlink satellite dish, a portable solar generator (battery) and a portable solar panel. RNZ Technology Specialist @Simon Dickinson said the ICE kits were a cost-effective way of boosting RNZ’s communication capabilities. When combined with the existing hand-held satellite phones, reporters will have sufficient equipment to set up a “base” with both power and connectivity, using either solar or their car battery. “The ICE kits will mean that reporters are able to access internet services on the road and send back video, photos and audio to the office whereas before they were limited to voice-only through the satellite phone. Having their own long-life battery that can be recharged using solar panels or their car battery means they can report from areas where essential services like mobile communication and power have been disrupted, areas that have traditionally been seen as cut off or isolated in an emergency.” Under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002, RNZ is designated as a critical Lifeline Utility organisation. This means RNZ is required to develop processes and maintain arrangements and relationships that support the effective and consistent broadcast of warnings and public information in an emergency. Watch RNZ Emergency Planning Manager Kate Gudsell explain why the ICE kits are a key part of ensuring RNZ is ready to respond. https://lnkd.in/gkacS5aU #publicmedia #emergencypreparedness #technology #cdem #emergencymanagement #readiness #response #lifelinemedia
